How Do You Survive The Waiting Period (Before Surgery)

Recommended Posts

as some of you know, I have 5 more months on my doctor supervision before I can have surgery..which does depress me and upsets me and really makes me feel...I am being punished somehow bc of how I look...but I know and realize (via reality) setting in about it. But for anyone reading this who has also had to wait, please give me (and whomever else has to wait also) ideas, any thoughts on how I can hang in there bc sometimes, it seems like forever...and a day

Does your doctor offer support group meetings or nutrician counseling? If so get a head start on things by attending and preparing yourself. If you don't already drink enough Water daily use the time to work yourself up to that goal before surgery. I am still pre-op and have been working on these things for months hopefully it will make things a little easier after surgery. Logging your food is also great. I have trouble sticking to this but from everything I've heard food logs/diaries are one of the best tools for long-term weight loss. Hope this helps!

I used to like going to a meeting here and there for lap banders. It was both for pre-op and post-op people. So there is a lot of sharing going on and I found it really helpful. I have to admit when I first went I felt like an alien. Didn't know how I would get to the point where I was actually going to be on the post-op side. My process took about 10 months and a lot of the time it felt like forever and a day. I just kept focused on getting myself to a place where I could accept all the changes that where coming. I was frustrated at first but then I found out that it helped me to wait. I got a chance to get both mentally and physically ready. Baby steps it's a process. Good luck hang in there!

I agree, this time is a great chance to prepare for the changes you'll be encountering. I've got seven months doctor supervised diet left (out of nine blink.png ) and sometimes it feels like forever, but I've really started looking at it as a time to practice my eating habits, get my body moving, and get my head straightened out (well, as much as it can be, lol) before I have to do this for real. I'm working on finding high-Protein foods I like, testing out Protein shakes I can stand, and taking small bites that I chew like crazy.

I know that sometimes it can be seen as a punishment, but I really don't think it is. I think it's designed to pre-screen people in a way, because if you are willing to go through all this waiting, you probably have the resolve it takes to be successful with the band. They want to make sure you don't just run out and get it done without taking the time to seriously consider what it will mean to live with the band. And even though it seems like forever now, you'll look back in a few years and realize how short a time it actually was.

Just hang in there, you can do it! smile.png

I had to wait 7 months from time of consult to surgery as I had a blood clot in the brain that had to desolve. Does your doctor require mindful eating sessions with a psychologist? If not find one that specializes in food addiction. This is the time to learn new food habits and understand why you either overeat or make bad food choices.

Also start exercising. I highly recommend swimming it is easy on the joints. The more you loose the easier it will be for the doctor to do the surgery.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
