I May Be Allergic To The Band...

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery last Monday (2/13). On the following Tuesday when I woke up in the hospital, I started wheezing. They just assumed it was due to the anesthesia. I stayed another night, and was sent home. A day later I couldn't breathe. So I went back to the hospital, had a CT-scan and xray, and was given a neubelizer and inhaler. They just said I was full of mucus. The treatments were working well, but werent getting rid of my wheezing. So today I woke up, felt like I couldnt breathe. I was sent to Pulmonlogy and was told that it sounds like I either have asthma or I was in anaphylaxis. I had to have a Breathing test which should I have mild obstruction. I have a latex allergy, and the band has no latex in it, but it is made of silicone and titanium. 2 weeks prior to surgery I was given a CPAP machine with a silicone mask. I woke up with 4 blistery sore on my face. So...now they are thinking the wheezing is part of my body have an allergic reaction to the silicone. I was put on prendisone to hopefully kill the wheezing, and I see my surgeon next week to discuss this further. I will be devastated if after everything I put in to this, to have it removed will kill me.

Anyone here of anyone needed the band removed due to allergies?

OMG....I pray that you won't have to go thru that. I have never heard of that and I hope that after you finish your rounds of prednisone, you will have some relief....Good luck to you

wow, that will be a bummer if that is the case. I have to say though, when I first got my cpap machine I got sores around my nose as well. I ended up putting on a couple of bandaids for some cushion between the mask and my face and that helped alot.

Im allergic to the glue on bandaides, and tape, so they have to use papertape.

Will you still have the option of gastic or the sleeve? theres another one.

Good luck let us know what happens

I don't want surgery to alter my anatomy. That is why I went with the band.

Found this info on silicone allergies

http://allergies.ygoy.com/2009/09/07/are-you-worried-about-silicone-allergy/

and this is also quite interesting

Contrary to “urban legend” these days, silicones do not typically cause allergic reactions. Silicones are an entire class of ingredients that are virtually everywhere in cosmetics—skin care and makeup. If you truly do have an allergy to silicones, you will have a difficult time using most personal grooming products available on the marketplace.

You will also have an equally hard time getting medical treatment, as silicones are used practically everywhere in doctors’ offices and hospitals…precisely because they so rarely cause reactions.

Many people these days claim to be allergic to silicone or silicone-based products, but true silicone allergies are very, very rare.

They’re certainly possible. But so are allergies to Water.

So hopefully it is not a silicone allergy but something else which hopefully will be easier to solve.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
