Softball First Team Sport Since Banding

Recommended Posts

I am 25 months out from my banding. I am down 65# but need to pursue dropping the remaining 30# suggested on the BMI Charts. My exercise has been sporadic at best. I have a positive gift for hurting myself and having to recover. At first with my initial weight drop everything was so loose in my joints that I literally could hurt myself walking. It was so embarrassing.

I got invited to participate on a CoEd Adult Softball team! Wow! I have not participated in team sports in 20 years. So I am excited, cautious, and nervous. I know I can only do my best. The team is a great mix of people doing this to 'move unnecessarily' or 'exercise'. I have the gloves and the first practice and batting cages went good.

Day following my batting cage practice, I got blocked at a family dinner. It has been a long while since this has happened. It is not pleasant, it hurts, and I avoid it like the plague. It took about 10 minutes to work out leaving me feeling bruised above the band. I know a couple of days of liquids is the solution, but the following day was Valentines.

Yeah all the right ingredients for consequences right? So I ate. I took my time. I chewed well. All seemed fine. Until after the meal when it felt like I was having muscle spasms above the band. No nausea or clearing just pain. I could feel the spasms with my hand on the spot.

Now I am sore. Way sore. I am gonna stick to liquids and let everything in there quit being mad. Batting practice is tomorrow. I want to be all better now. But it is tender to breath deeply. I had the hernia fixed when they put the band in. When I have had the experiences where I get through with a 'blocked' episode soreness is typical with me. But this catching my breath is new and very uncomfortable and concerning.

I do not want to make an unnecessary big deal out of this but I do not want to ignore a real problem either. So rather than yammering at the non-banded I felt I might find commiseration here.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
