On Saturday I start my Preop Diet for 11 days and I am SO freaking confused!!! I have a list of shakes from my Drs office but when I went go to the nutritional store they tell me that these are Dirty shakes and I should be drinking Clean Shakes????

Here is the list the Dr gave me:

Atkins Advantage

Wonder Slim

Pure Protein

Myoplex

Isopure

lean Body

Carb Solutions

Muscle Milk

This is the sample I bought at Nutritional Store:

Bluebonnet whey Protein Isolate

Any input would really help.

Thanks!

I think that everyone has opinions on what is best and they all have their pros and cons. My Dr has me on the same types that your Dr suggested and the guy and the nutrition place thought they were very good choices. I just get mine from Wal Mart though. LOL I would just go with what your Dr says, he is the professional right? LOL

I've never heard of their "clean" shake. Did they say why the others are "dirty"? You surgeon said to use those ones, so that would be good enough for me. Find one you like, or two, or three for variety. They get old after a day or two.

You can get some of those brands at Walmart and costco. Probably cheaper than the clean brand also. Remember, the pre-op diet is time limited, you won't be on these forever. Get what tastes good to you. After your immediate post-op period, you'll not be having them for your main nutrition, if at all.

Never heard of clean vs dirty either. My doctor did require whey isolate. Note not all whey is created equal. Isolate is purer and easier for the body to digest. When reading the ingrediants look for Isolate.

Well I'll give you my opinion. I would stick with what the doctor tells you, the salesman at the nutrition store is just that a salesman, most salesman try to get the most they can by selling any product regardless of the difference. You can have 2 different brands that are identical in every way except the price, that salesman is going to push the higher priced product especially if he's working on a commission. I know a lot about this especially after 20 years experience. I myself use Body Fortress (like $15 at Wal Mart) not really any difference. You're going to do what you think is best for you but that is just my opinion on things. Good Luck on your journey

Even though I'm pre surgery I agree with the others, your doctor knows best. I've been trying different Protein Drinks and powders trying to find the ones I like the best before I start the pre-op diet. Gotta say I tried ready made muscle milk, strawberry, OMGosh! It was horrible, I was nauseated the rest of the day and had an awful after taste for several hours! YUCK! I won't be using that one for sure!! LOL

Thanks for all the advice, I tried Metabolic Reset because a friend recommended it and it tasted great BUT the side effects were horrible... I'll just say I need to stay close to my bathroom.

Today I am taking Atkins Advantage and it's honestly not that bad although I still have to make trips to the restroom its not as frequent as yesterday and not so painful.

I think the store employee was probably talking about the artificial ingredients; sugar substitutes, colors etc.

I am very careful what I buy but that is because I go to a nutrition store where I trust the people I speak to. they have given me info which I check out myself either on the internet or a trusted professional.

I would just caution you about the sugars they use. also whey Protein is the best source of good Protein for you. since you will be eating so little for the next month - month and a half, try to get the best products you can for yourself. Target and Walmart do not carry them.

this is my opinion.

luvbug......I am drinking EAS AdvantEDGE, choc. fudge. They are wonderful and I haven't experienced any bathroom "issues" as a result of them. I have never heard of "clean" vs "dirty" either. The dietician at my doctor's office was very impressed with the Vitamin content of of the EAS drinks and told me I could even add a fruit or veggie with it since the calories are low and she had no problem with me having 4 shakes a day if I so choose. Good luck dear! You will be great!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
