Do You Tell People When They Compliment You?

Recommended Posts

I told some folks, but not everyone. When someone complments me, I usually say "Thanks". If they ask me how, I will say like the op says, portion comtrol and exercise. Unless tehy are frinds, I don't go into the lapband thing, but I don't need to with friends, because they all know. My neighbor, who never knew me fat, said that the other neighbor told him I lost a lot of weight. He asked how, because he needs tol oose about 50 -60 lbs, I told him that I do the Portion Control and exercise, but that I had a lapband, too! He was real interested in that for himself. Never know! How is it lying if you just say thank you to someone who says you look like you have lost weight?

I have never kept my band a secret. Millions of people in this country struggle with obesity, so I don't think it's something to be ashamed of, although there will always be people who feel I took the easy way out. I didn't want to be a statistic anymore, and I knew I needed a little help. Anyone who compliments me and asks how I did it will know I have a lap band, and that's fine with me.

You aren't lying if you just say "Thank you!" when someone says you look good, or you look like you've lost weight. Now, if they ask HOW you've lost weight, you may consider telling them, but you can also say you lost weight by eating right, smaller portions and exercising which is ALSO true. For me, it would depend on who the person is and if I want them to know about the surgery. If I'm starting to feel good about myself, I don't want someone else's judgment of weight loss surgery bringing me down.

Weight loss is one of those slippery slopes where people ask questions we might not be comfortable answering. But in our society fat is bad, thin is good. If we are moving toward thin, it is a topic that is not off limits.

I once asked someone if he was losing weight. Turned out he had terminal lung cancer and was on chemo. He was keeping it quiet for professional reasons. His answer to me was "yes, I am." He was not overweight to begin with. Boy did I feel like a heel when he passed away.

On the flip side, the person I complimented on her weight loss, whom I asked how she did it then she told me about the gastric bypass she had. I will be forever grateful to her. I though you had to be much heavier than I was to qualify for WLS. She gave me great information.

You do not have to disclose any medical treatment you are undergoing. There should be no guilt or feeling that you are lying by leaving personal medical treatment out of any conversation.

I would say thank you and leave it at that.

I think too many people think they have the right to pry into your business.

Weight is a very personal topic. I have told only husband and adult children.

If I were to tell anyone else, the world would know and those people have no need to know my personal life.

When people compliment me, I just say "Thanks, yeah I have lost some weight" and smile. If they ask how, I'll usually tell them I've had weight-loss surgery... You never know who might hear your story and be inspired to make the change in their lives too!

I don't tell people because I don't fee like dewing with the judgements or comments that comes with it specially because my BMI was low (38). There's a mentality that people that have weightless surgery are cheaters and take the easy way out. If only they knew how hard it really is but since there's so much ignorance I prefer to leave the educating to others. I guess it really depends on the person asking and the person telling. I don't have much tolerance or patience for stupidity and knowing my temper and character it's just better I keep my business to myself lol.

There's nothing wrong with WLS and I'm definitely not ashamed of it it's just best for me to keep my journey amongst my closest more trustworthy friends and family members. Whatever you chose to do, tell or not tell, is your provacative, there's no right or wrong answer just YOUR answer!! I've your life the best way you see fit.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
