In Need Of Some Help!

Recommended Posts

Hello all! My name is Shanelle and I have been very interested in getting the Lap Band done. I just wanted to ask everyone if they knew of any doctors in the Boston or New England Area that perform the Single Incision Lap Band Procedure? If so I would really appreciate it if you could give me the doctors information.

Thanks!!

I know of a better place to ask this question, but since it's on the website of a competitor of LapBand Talk, I won't post it here. I'll send you a private message about it.

Why single incision? I have heard there is a lot more post op pain because they wrangle all the surgical instruments thru the one hole! I dont see why you are worried about your pretty tummy (the scars heal away to nothing) if you are obese...it seems like the least of your concern, the main one being to get healthy and find a good doc who knows what he is doing!

When I ask for single incision my surgeon said I was too heavy for that procedure. So depending on your weight you may not qualify. That being said I was very happy with Dr. Brams at Lahey Clinic in Burlington. You could call and see if they do single incision in general and if so see if you qualify or not. To be truthfull my 4 small insisions are less than 1/4 inch and my port scar is thinner and lighter than my gallbladder scar which is 22 years old.

Thanks so much everyone I will look into the doctor in Burlington and the only reason that I wanted to do the single was cause I saw some horrible scars on two people and I started to second guess the whle surgery in general.

Different people, different scars. Just because two people had horrible scars doesn't mean you will. And honestly, I'd rather have a few small, ugly scars on my abdomen than 92 big, heavy, ugly extra pounds to carry around everyday. As it happens, the only band-related scar you can see on my now is my port incision, and it's pretty boring. Of course, even at my goal weight, I have no desire to wear a bikini in public...

I'm having Dr Schneider at Beth Isreal do my surgery. While I'm not having single incision done, he did mention that if someone feels strongly about it, he has done it.

I live in TX but I had the single incision in September & could not be happier. You can look at my stomach & not notice a thing. I also got a low profile port so, hopefully, it won't ever be too noticeable.

I went home the same day & had little down time. Not much pain either. I was not going to pay the extra (I was self-pay) but my sisters both said to so I did and am so glad. It was worth it to me.

I also did a lot of research on my doctor & felt confident in his abilities. Dr. Sashi Ganta in Austin. So far, I've lost 60 lbs by following the instructions - most of the time.

All the best to you!

Considering the aftercare; going to the doctors office every 3 weeks or so for several months (took me 6 months of fills to get restriction); I would take that into consideration when choosing a doctor. I chose not to go to Mass General because I knew I did'nt want to deal with shlepping to Boston (Oh the traffic) and paying 20 bucks for parking.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
