Has Anyone Successfully Completed The Couch To 5K Program?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I am two weeks post op and today I started my new excercise program, the couch to 5k program. I cant say it was easy as I am seriously out of shape, but I am so proud i completed the whole thirty minutes and I hope it will only get easier. I wanted to know if any other bandsters have completed this program? Please share :)

Yep, I started it about 2 weeks post op as well. It's an amazing program. I finished it, and am now training for a half marathon. Ran 4 miles last week and could have kept going. Love couch to 5 K!

Wow that is so inspiring! Thankyou. Would you only do the three times a week as recommended or would you do more?

Just did it 3 days a week. There were times I thought I for sure would have to repeat weeks, but I never did. Don't be afraid to repeat if you need to though, whatever you need to do to finish it. You will feel so accomplished!

Being that I'm new to this and 3 weeks out PO, what is the couch to 5K program consist of? I am doing 2 miles on the treadmill, alternating with Leslie Sansone, Walking videos and got up to 3 miles the other day and feeling good.

The Couch to 5K is a 9-week running program designed to get anyone from being a couch potato to being able to run a 5K, or run 30 min straight.

The website is C25K.com

I downloaded the Get Running app on my iPhone, which is a c25k app, and I love it. It keeps track of your runs and tells you when to run and when to walk. It also lets you play Pandora (or other music) and then lowers the volume when it tells you things.

This morning I did day 2 of Week 4. The schedule is as follows:

Always start with a 5-min walk to warm up and end with a 5-min walk to cool down.

Week 1: Runs 1, 2, 3 Total Running: 8 min

8X: Run 1 minute. Between runs, walk 1.5 min.

Week 2: Runs 1, 2, 3 Total Running: 9 min

6X: Run 1.5 min. Between runs, walk 2 min.

Week 3: Runs 1, 2, 3 Total Running: 9 min

2X: Run 1.5 min, then walk 1.5 min. Run 3 min, then walk 3 min.

Week 4: Runs 1, 2, 3 Total Running: 16 min

2X: Run 3 min, then walk 1.5 min. Run 5 min, then walk 2.5 min.

Week 5: Run 1 Total Running: 15 min

3X: Run 5 min. Between runs, walk 3 min.

Week 5: Run 2 Total Running: 16 min

Run 8 min, then walk 5 min. Run 8 min.

Week 5: Run 3 Total Running: 20 min

Run 20 min. with no walking

Week 6: Run 1 Total Running: 18 min

Run 5 min, then walk 3 min. Run 8 min, then walk 3 min. Run 5 min.

Week 6: Run 2 Total Running: 20 min

Run 10 min, then walk 3 min. Run 10 min.

Week 6: Run 3 Total Running: 25 min.

Run 25 min with no walking.

Week 7: Runs 1, 2, 3 Total Running: 25 min

Run 25 min with no walking.

Week 8: Runs 1, 2, 3 Total Running: 28 min

Run 28 min with no walking.

Week 9: Runs 1, 2, 3 Total Running: 30 min

Run 30 min with no walking.

You can repeat weeks as necessary. I repeated week 1, but I've been smooth-sailing ever since. Hope this helps and good luck!

Thank you so much for sharing this info with me. I'm hoping in a few weeks, I will start this. Working on doing 3 miles of powerwalking and running on treadmill and working up to 5 or 6 miles a day at some point.

Many many years ago (feels like another lifetime) I was a runner. I loved it and it always made me upset with myself that I have become so fat and out of shape. Every attempt I have made to lose the weight and get back on track have failed (obviously why I am here). Now I am nearly 10 days post op and feel optimistic and a renewed sense of self confidence that I felt I had lost.

Reading about the program on here was a wonderful surprise and I am totally excited for when I will be able to start this. Never heard of it before.

I am wondering for you all that have done this program how soon you were able to start after being banded? I just got myself a gym membership and can hardly wait.

I've completed program twice and have run 2 5ks . I have never ran even for exercise in my life. Started week ago to do program over and flared my allergies so I have to revamp. I loved the way my body looked when program completed and myetabolism improved

I LOVE it and got a bunch of my friends and family hooked too! Its simple and started out doing 3 days per week. I try and get to 4 days p/w and do the day 3 on that fourth day. I have been stalled at week 5 for a couple of weeks but now I am on week 6 tomorrow at 5am. I have my 5k next months so I am commited for the next 4 weeks to RUN the whole thing. wish me luck!! Any suggestions on what a tight bander can eat while training?? Thanks!@@

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
