Waiting For Approval/gallstones

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

FInished my pre req and went to get my results from them this past saturday. They told me I have gallstones. I have never had a problem with them. Doc wanted to take my gallbladder out! It took me a long time to make the decision to get this invasive lapband. I don't want to have my galllbladder out and then wait a nother month to get a date for my surgery. I'm thinking I shouldn't have any gallstone attaks as I will changing my diet completely with the Lap-band. Has anyone not removed it with gallstones and changed their diet and have been doing just fine? I opted out since they said it was optional. Also I found out I have a hiatal hernia. Also never had a problem with that but they said they can fix that while they put the band in so thats good. ^_^ I'm in the waiting process to get approval from my insurance which should hopefully any day now ^___^. So excited. Thanks for your imput/ answers

I'd get the gallbladder out. I would have LOVED to have that option, instead of the months and months of chronic pain, and acute attacks.

My doctor told me that weight loss can cause gall stones. I had my gall bladder taken out after a severe attack and ended up in the er. I am still waiting for my lap band surgery (hopefully end of March, beginning of April) so I am glad I got it removed before the surgery. There is no need to be in pain if you don't have to be. Also the surgery was so easy. I was up and running around within a day or two. I have heard that people had to have there band emptied to have their gall bladder removed and it was like starting all over again with finding their green zone. I know I wouldn't want to go through that again from what I have read on this forum about finding your green zone.

same thing happened to me, they found one huge stone in my gallbladder so instead of lapband it was gallbladder removal. and he wanted to put lapband in 3 weeks later. i've heard of some doctors doing it at the same time. my dr said he didn't do that incase the gallbladder opened up it would contaminate the site and I would possibily never be able to get lapband.

I found out that I had a rather large gallstone (size of a ping pong) a couple of years ago. I brought it up to my surgeon prior to surgery and he was okay with me keeping my gallbladder since this is not a stone that should cause issues in the future. I have heard of people having gallstones all their life with no complications. Good luck with your decision and on your journey!

I had to have my gallbladder out 2 years ago, at my post op visit, I talked to my doc (hes the same one that did my band-after Gall bladder surgery) about the band, He told me that its better to have your gallbladder out before lap band because about 70% of patients eventually have to have it out after the band. The problem is, when you have a surgery like that, they have to totally empty your band and you have to start over from scratch having it filled after you have healed from the gallbladder

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
