Lapband Now Hypoglycemic?

Recommended Posts

I was banded in 10/2011 been doing well slow weight loss but steady :). Now my pcp has me checking my sugar daily an says im hypoglycemic. I had a few occurences where my bs dropped an she thinks its because of the band she says its malabsorbtion sp? But i thought with the band there really was no problem like that only with the bypass. Any ideas im totally confused. Oh an my pcp wasnt very happy with my decision of the band in the first place and now is saying well i hope its not going to give me other complications too!!! I did the band so i wouldnt have sugar problems an such yugh!!! Thanks all :)

I am that way, but I take care of it by eating every couple of hours and making sure I am getting plenty of Protein. I have never heard of bandsters having issues with nutrients that is with GB

The band doesn't cause malabsorption. I would think that it is just to do with the reduced quantity of food. Make sure that you are eating regularly(nutritious/healthy foods) and plan a healthy snack in between meals. I would make sure I carried something in my bag to eat to make sure my BS didn't drop.

My diet post band has really helped with my low blood sugar. How long after eating do you start to have a problem. If it's after 6 hours you are hungry. Eat something. My worst event post surgery was just recently. For food that day I had a Protein Shake, chicken breast with salsa and low fat cheese and sweet pepper. I'd done an hour at the gym in the morning and had gone back in the evening for Water aerobics. I had not eaten dinner so I almost fainted in the pool. Not good. If I'd had a Protein shake before the class that would'nt have happened. Lesson learned.

I am having low BS episodes now too. I get really shaky in the evenings. I just had my band filled last week, so I am hoping it will level out. The biggest problem is no matter how hard I try, I don't seem to get more than about 600 calories in a day by following the eating guidelines. The problem with that is I am just NOT hungry for more! 1/2 to 3/4 cup of food total is all I can handle and it keeps my stomach satisfied, but not my BS. I don't want to have my band loosened, but I hope that I will figure out a way to get more calories in (healthy calories, that is) and still maintain the weight loss!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
