How Long After Surgery...

Recommended Posts

I recieved my appointment in the mail for my post-op appointments, and I am not even seeing anyone until over 2 weeks after surgery. Is that normal? I thought I was told I would be seen a week after to make sure I was healing alright, but I am not going back until 2 weeks. This is strange to me. I can't exercise until I see the staff again, so I can't for 2 weeks, then I don't see the Nutrionist again until 8 weeks after. Is this all normal? I figured the month after surgery I would have check-ups to make sure things were going alright. What has everyone else done?

I didn't see my dr either until 2 weeks later. I did have a nutrion class that day also before I was to start back on food. It was actually 12 days later, and I was so happy she told me I could start eating food that day!

It is normal to wait for 2 weeks, but every Dr. is different. Now of course if you are having any problems before your visit you should call and they will see you. Now my Nutritionist saw me ever 4 weeks, but I also met with her 1 week after beginning solid foods with my food log. I found my nutritionist a very valuable person as she helped me with reworking several recipes to make them more healthy and typically with a lot less sodium. You may be able to ask to reschedule that appt with her/him so that you can meet them sooner.

Best of Luck

Pretty normal to me too! But as the other folks were saying, if you have a problem, call your sugeon's office ASAP!! You should be ok about not seeing the Nut for awhile as my surgoen's office had me on liquids and gave me the guidelines in my paperwork and follow up information packet from the hospital. Karen

My post op appointment was 9 days post op. I was told to make it between 7-10 days. All that happened was I was weighed and asked how I was doing. They did not even look at my incisions which I found very odd. I mean they could have been infected for all they knew. I guess they figured I would say something if there was a problem.

I never saw the doctor after surgery, only nurses. And I didn't really have a post op appointment, just my fill (when I decided I needed one, I made that appointment). Don't get me started on the lack of follow up at my clinic....grrr

Mine is 2 weeks after as well. I was banded Feb 3rd and I go in on Feb 20th. I have my first fill 2 weeks after that as well for early March.

So as you can see, it's not out of the ordinary.

I was told to follow up with my PCP after surgery which I haven't done yet. I am healing well so will call and see if I need to.

I was told to remove my own bandages after 24 hours. They used....glue I think? Something like it; I didn't have stitches or anything like that. After 1.5 years the scars are minimal.

Mine was scheduled for 2 weeks post op, but my surgeon called to check on me and I told him that one of my inisicions looked red he had me come in one week post op. He placed me on antibiotics then. I went in 5 weeks post op for my fill. I also met with my nutritionist and my therapist that first week post op. I can call whenever I want to meet with the nutrionist or the therapist, which is extremely nice :)

My surgeon told me to come in a week after surgery. So I am going to see him on Tuesday of next week which I am glad about. And as far as my scars go, they look really good and they didn't put bandages on them, they put this large over-wrap thing over me to keep everything tight, and told me to leave it on for 2 weeks ..although I can take it off and shower.

Had surgery Jan 30. Post op appt was one week later. NP removed steri strips, gave me more pain meds, and set up my fill appt for 5 weeks. Meeting with my dietician this tues to discuss transition from puree to real food, thank God. My surgery was done at a Center of Excellence, which I believe is why they really keep on top of you with the pre surgery patient education and post op care.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
