Take 2?Going To See The Fertility Specialist Again

Recommended Posts

My lap band journey started in May of 2011when my husband and I after trying to get pregnant for over 5 years went and saw a fertility specialist. At the time I weighed 345. Now don’t get me wrong…I really do appreciate honesty and bluntness…but the doctor took one look at my chart, and told me I was too fat to get pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy. He said he could take my $40,000 but the chance of it working was slim to none. He then drew out what the lap band procedure was, wrote all the negatives I had against me with PCOS and gave me the name of a practice who could do the surgery in the area. Needless to say, I was blown away! I cried and cried, and when I got in the car to drive home, I realize he may have given me the kick in the butt I needed to finally lose weight for good and called to schedule my slot in the next information session regarding Weight Loss Surgery. When at the meeting, I realized that out of all the choices presented, Lap Band was for me. I had to do the 6 month weight loss program for insurance. I was determined and motivated! During this time, my husband was also seen by an urologist and we found out that he has retrograde ejaculation and is being seen by his doctor on a regular basis now.

I had my Lap Band Surgery on my birthday, November 17th. This morning, I weighed in at 257. I know it is still a bit too soon to get pregnant (from what the doctors say), but I hope I can go in today and prove to this doctor that I have been working hard, and have made the lifelong changes that will support and healthy and safe pregnancy. I guess I am looking for a game plan today…some positive words that will put us on a path to becoming pregnant when the time is right. My husband and I decided that we will see how the doctor is today, and see where our comfort level is with what he has to say.

Wish us luck today!!!

Good Luck to you! I hope all went well today. I had my surgery on 3/8 and have had no luck so far. I actually called today to see my obgyn to setup an appt to see what our next steps will be. I'm hoping my hormones will level out soon and it will just happen. I can dream can't I?laugh.png

I was banded in June of 2011. I am now over 6 months pregnant. I didn't think we would ever get pregnant to be honest. It didn't take long and we were shocked! Things are going well and I never have had a fill because I didn't get a chance to. Right after surgery, I was healing, doing my follow ups and ended up moving away from my surgeon for a new job. While I was looking for a new surgeon (many would not even see me since they will not accept patients they didn't operate on) I developed the "flu". It was morning sickness, not the flu. I had all day sickness for the first 4 months and my specialist was worried about the baby being underweight. My last appointment, she is weighing exactly where she should and is super active in there.

Focus on the weight loss and let nature take its course. I didn't even get a chance to officially use my band but the added stress of trying to get pregnant will be bad for your weight loss and isn't good for a future mommy and baby. Best of luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
