Another Newbie and a little nervous

Recommended Posts

Hi my name is Debra. I just had surgery on Feb 15. I am doing ok still a little sore. The port is a real pain in the --- side . I do have one question. I've been reading the posts and hear everyone talking about the gas pain. This may be a real newbie question but how do you know for sure if it is gas pains or just being too full? I feel hungry but have that pressure in my chest like I am full. I am on liquids still. Thanks for the info.

Gas pains will occur, even when you haven't eaten. Often, you will feel it in one or both shoulders. At least I did.

Chest pains often occur when you are eating and take (1) bite too many or don't chew well enough. If you are swollen, on the insides, since surgery, you may have restriction. You'll be able to feel it on liquids as well.

After surgery, I could hear my liquids gurgle, gurgle on the way down.

Congrats! Shawn

Hi Debra, Take some Gas X and it should help with the problem. I didn't think I had gas problems either but it caught up with me 3 days later. I was banded on 2/13. I had the gel caps here so I punctured one, squeezed the inside out onto a spoon and took it that way. They do have the chewable ones though.

The port pain...are you feeling like a tugging or sharp pinch on your left side? I still have that myself.

Thanks for the info. I did get some gas X last night and that seemed to help. I woke up this morning feeling much much better. The port area is just sore still. More annoying than anything now. My chest, I guess sternum actually is still a little sore also. I started a little soft foods last night and am trying that today to see if that will help me feel not so sleepy. These sites are great. Lots of info and very helpful. Already lost 15 pounds! Of course that is all liquids but it's a great jump start!

Welcome to bandland Debra! I'm glad you found us and hope that we can provide you with the support and information that you need.

Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better. I was pretty sore for 4-5 days after surgery, but woke up one day feeling better and not feeling sore when I moved around.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
