I just found out yesterday that my insurance (Cigna) approved me for surgery. I was very excited until this morning when I remembered that I have a deductible that I have not yet met for this year. Do any of you know from experience how this is handled. Will I be required to pay that up front before I can have the surgery?

I work in the healtcare industry in regards to events like this. Every healthcare facility is different, but in our case (a larger facility) there are many different options. It depends on how high your deductable is as well. If you have for example a $10,000 deductable and cannot bring in the money then the surgery may be rescheduled. If you can't bring in the money due to financial hardship there are funds available to help with the deductable. If you have detailed questions PM me, I'll do my best to help :)

I work in Patient Accounts for a hospital, most of your deductible will be applied to the physicians bill since they typically get their claim in to the insurance first. If your deductible is under $1,000, the hospital may not ask for it up front, but to be safe, call the hospital and ask what their policy is.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
