Psych Evaluation Scheduled, Then My Doctor Will Submit To Bcbs!

Recommended Posts

I am finally at the final stage before my doctor will submit to my insurance company. I have been reading the threads and saw that some people had issues with the Psych Eval. I don't want to lie, but is there anything I need to avoid saying? I feel like I'm mentally stable and have a healthy realistic view of the surgery and life after, but I know sometimes doctor's read way too much into things we say. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!!

I was honest with mine. Told why I wanted this extra tool to lose the forever unwanted pounds.

Most of all no one forced me into this surgery it is SOMETHING I wanted and not that was forced onto me.

Just my opinion Good luck.

No, that sounds about right. They just want to be sure you're responcible, know what and why you are getting into this. Make sure you're not just looking for some vain cosmetic fad thing, or that you have self destructive tendencies, etc. abusive with laxitives, etc, etc.

Just want to be sure you're a stable sane normal person.

I'm 60 years old, and I am a product of the 60's. So when the subjetc cane around to drug abuse, I shared some things. She would not let up on it, kept coming back to it. Finally I said Hey! I was 18 y/o, it was 1969! Give me a break! She burst out laughing and agreed with me!

I just had my psych eval last week and thought it went great. I really don't know what you would need to avoid saying. They are basically just making sure that you fully comprehend the surgery and the lifestyle changes you need to make. And that any psych issues (depression, anxiety, OCD, etc) are under control. She pretty much just went over my relationship with food, my family history, and my previous depression issues. She did, however, try to talk me out of the band and into bypass because of my "relationship" with grazing, since I am always on the go with two toddlers. But, I just don't think I can deal with how invasive that procedure is.

Good luck with your eval. I am meeting with my surgeon Tuesday to go over all of my test results, etc, so I am getting anxious!

my psych eval consisted of a 370 question test. A week after the test, I came back to talk to the psychiatrist and a student from the local university who was shadowing him. It was a pretty basic conversation where they asked some questions and I would respond. I was really scared before I went, but it was very laid back.

Thanks you guys! It seems like the closer this comes to being a reality, the more nervous I get that something will go wrong!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
