Considering Having The Lapband

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, my name is Jessica I am 27 years old and I have been struggling with weight issues almost all my life. I currently am weighing 231lbs. I went last night with my cousin to my first informational meeting about bariatric surgeries and the different types that are being offered. I am considering having the lap done because I am beyond fed up with trying different diets and only loosing 10lbs and nothing else even I were to starve myself. I have tried several diets and have joined to many gyms to name here. I like the gym but i still have trouble keeping the weight off. Well I cant stay on long because I am at work, Just wanted to wish everyone luck. And to start off it's nice to meet everyone.

It is no doubt a big big decision. It took me two years of thinking, thinking and thinking to decide to get it done. I have tried a few diets and have lost so much weight over the years only to gain it back. I believe that there are people in this world who can eat what they want when they want and gain only five pounds, me I gain 50. So next week I am having it done, you can email me at sjkaighen@gmail if you want more infor or want to share your ideas and thoughts.

Before you make any decisions, be sure and weigh all your WLS options.

I had my band place 17 years ago not knowing what was available to me as far as WLS and lived for all these years by what THE BAND allowed me to eat and not the healthy stuff I WANTED to be able to eat and keep down. I have lived my entire adult life sitting next to the restroom in restaurants so that I could go vomit the food that my band didnt want me to have. Happy, sad, mad.... that band ruled my life like an abusive husband and dictated what it wanted me to eat. I had it removed on 1/6/12 and OMG, what a relief!

After months and months of researching (once I figured out that I didnt have to live this way anymore!) I have decided to go with the vertical sleeve gastrectomy and will be sleeved next week. Yes, this is a very drastic surgery but being overweight and miserable deserves drastic measures and from all the revision patients that I have talked to on the VSG boards, the sleeve is everything the band promises to be but never will.

So again, please do your research and understand exactly what you are getting yourself into.

Good luck with your weight loss journey!!!

I had my lapband placed 3 yrs ago never regretting a day of it...I have done exceptionally well and have kept my weight off and controlled for the past three yrs. I was on an insulin pump for over 10 yrs and I no longer take anything whatsoever for diabetes because it disappeared along with the extra weight...I have my life back and I am in control of my weight...Best decision that could have made.......You must be ready mentally for it to a be a success.......

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
