Getting A Fill Prior To Flying On Vacation?

Recommended Posts

I am just courious? I am due to have my first fill March 1, just a week prior to me flying to San Diego for Vacation with my husband. I have been told that I may feel some pressure until the flight is over with. Has anyone had any issues with flying close to the time they had a fill done and what happened? Considering, I just had surgery and I have had a really rough week with pain, I am kind of wondering if I should wait to have the fill untill after I get back.

I don't know how long you have to wait prior. I had an appointment three days before I was going on vacation (to San Diego!) last year and they wouldn't do the fill. They said the band will tighten in the air. I didn't ask how long it should be before flight. It's weird because I just happened to mention I was going. If I hadn't said anything, they would have done the fill, but I think I was joking that I wanted the fill before vacation because you always gain weight on vacation.

Wow I never knew that! And you know what's funny, I'm the type of person on a flight I have to drink alcohol to wash down my xanax (I have a HUGE fear of flying) and I noticed the last time I was on a plane, it took me forever to finish a bloody mary.

Also, fyi, if you don't live in a higher altitude area, that will mess with your restriction. We went on a cross country trip, and when we were at the Grand Canyon (alt 10,000 feet), I couldn't even eat ravioli! I felt like crap! And on top of that it was TOM which restricts me even more. My dad goes "you know the altitude may have tightened your band up" he was right because when we got to Las Vegas, I was fine!

Have fun in San Diego! Good luck!

i have flown many times after getting a fill. i've never been uncomfortable but i can't really eat either. i just sip my drink.

the different elevations across the country do effect the band. being from the midwest, when i go to vegas i can't eat.

I'm flying this spring for the first time also and am wondering about becoming tighter. I'm not so concerned about on the plane (although I have a five hour flight so I will get hungry I guess!) but afterwards....When you land, does the tightness loosen up? I would hate to be on vacation in San Francisco and not be able to eat or drink anything!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
