Taking Time Off Work

Recommended Posts

I am a nurse and I work in a clinic setting, so I am walking all day. I also have to stand for long periods of time to do procedures and sometimes assessments on the patient. So with that being said is a week long enough or should I stay home for 2 weeks? I know this varies by person but any experience/input is great appreciated. YOU GUYS ROCK... thx

Other factors to consider....how old are you? I am 61 and took three weeks. The first week I was in so much pain (was only given Tylenol with codiene for pain) and couldn't even get out of chair or bed without help. The second week the pain was significantly better but I was still working at getting enough liquid in and getting rest, easily fatigued. The third week I began to walk and rebuild my stamina. Also a nurse like you. So I went back after 3 weeks off and felt wonderful. But some people go back in one week and do ok. My doctor said if I had the time, take it and I was very glad I did.

I took the two weeks cause I needed it, if you have the sick time I would suggest the whole two weeks. Lots of people go back after a few days, but this is surgery and you deserve the time to heal.

I would give yourself atleast two weeks. it took me ten days not to need any signifigant rest or pain medicine. This surgery as you know as a nurse is a major thing and should be treated as such. If i moved the wrong way my staples hurt so I'd wait until your staples come out to go back to your work as a nurse. Hope you have a good surgery and that you have a good reovery.

I had my surgery on Friday 12/30/11 and by the following Tuesday 1/3 was ready to go back to work. I didn't actually go back until 1/9. I work in an office and spend a lot of the day sitting. If I had the go ahead from my dr, I would not have taken so long off. I don't know if this helps, but I'm 41.

As far as pain meds, I wasn't taking them by Sunday, 1/1/12.

I was banded about 3.5 months ago. I was off work for two weeks, but I had a complication. Without the problem, I could have gone back to work after one week. I have a desk job, so this is very different from what you do. I wouldn't have been ready for a physical job for at least 2 weeks after surgery, without the complications. I am 54 and now feel great and haven't had any further complications since surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
