Insurance Drags!

Recommended Posts

Well i have gone through my 6 months of supervised visits and did all the other necessary tasks for my insurance company's (Highmark BCBS) requirements to be consired for the surgery. All of this was completed back on Nov 1st 2011and i'm STILL waiting for approval! ARGH. Well i should say i was denied within 1 weeks time the first go round (Dec 12th or something like that) on the basis that my dr. did not submit a more complete review of my 6 month supervision. He sent in a summarized version of it and apparently that is not enough. Well it took about 1-2 weeks for that to get resubmitted and now i have been waiting for an answer ever since.

Each time i call my insurance to check the status they give me a different answer to my case. One minute the case has been closed/denied and the next it's open and still under review. I'm so sick of trying to get an accurate answer from these people and i feel like my paperwork has slipped through the cracks. Long story short, they (insurance) say they have until 2/9 to get me an answer because that is the date the Dr. submitted as a predetermined surgery date (not my actual date for surgery). I want to call insurance every day still to see if my case has been finished but i know i will just hear the same roller coaster answers as before and i really don't feel like explaining what is going on since how do i know what they are now telling me is true/accurate?! The dr's office has been getting the same answers too so they are no help either. Any who, just venting!

Hope others are having better luck than me, just wish it was my turn now! i hope this long wait is a sign that they will approve me the 2nd go round since the denial only took a week!!

Cheerio :)

I hope you get some good news soon. I called after two weeks and ended up finding out I was approved. I cried. I can't tell you how long it took to get approved and how many hoops I had to jump through. It can be so frustrating. I have a friend who had been trying for almost 10 years to get the surgery so I'm thankful it took about 9 months. Keep at it and don't give up!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
