When Will The Chest Pains Stop

Recommended Posts

I am 7 days post op and on day 3 the chest pains began. I called my surgeon. Told me it was normal and just gas being released. But day 7 its still here and Ive been taking gas x but nothing helps. I want to cry.....

I remember the gas pains...they hurt more than my incisions! I hate to be the bearer of bad news but nothing really helped mine either. I've heard people say that walking around a lot helps (plus it's good to prevent blood clots). The only thing that really helped me was lying on my left side as soon as I was able, but unfortunately it just takes time for the CO2 to metabolize. Hang in there, you'll feel better soon!

I agree with Jenn. The gas pains were way worse than incisions! Try a heating pad on your chest/stomach or even your back. This helped me those first couple of weeks.

Take Care :)

GAS X won't help because the gas is not in your digestive system. It is left over gas in the chest cavity that was pumped in by your surgical team to expand the area enough for them to do the surgery. You need to take the painkillers that your Dr(hopefully) prescribed.

Are you and your doctor 100% sure this is just gas or normal healing? The term chest pain scares me that it can be your heart!

I wouldn't worry too much about it presenting as chest pains - often it settles in the chest cavity or left shoulder- it is painful, but walking, trying to release gas (ie, fart, LOL) and the heating pad should help- and DO take the pain pills. Don't be a hero!

Good luck.

the pain from the gas lasted almost 2 weeks for me, long after the incision pain was gone. The one thing that helped me alot was standing in the shower and letting the hot Water just cascade over my shoulder and chest. Keep moving, as you do, you will feel the gas move around and eventually you will start feeling relief. I'm now 6 weeks post op and feel wonderful

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
