Left side makes me think it could be gas. Try walking as much as u can to get it moving around. I hope u feel better. Congrats!

For the first five days I thought something was wrong because although I didn't have the classic shoulder gas pain, anytime I would take a deep breath, it would literally stab my left side. I was afraid something was wrong with the port. When I went to the follow up appt. 6 days later, my doctor said, "hmm. I'm not sure why that would be doing that". Wasnt very re-assured. I said well if it doesn't go away at what point do you want a phone call. He assured me then it is probably gas and should go away. It did. I would though call your surgeon if you have any concerns. This site is great and although we all have similar symptoms at times, we're not doctors. Just make sure you keep an eye on things and consult with your surgeon as well. Thats what they are there for.

I had this pain too. It lasted for about 3 weeks. Pain in the side, always yawning, difficulty taking deep breaths, sleeping at night was the worst (pain and breathing). It does go away. My doctor said that it was due to the surgery being around the diaphram (breathing) muscles and associated bruising. It gets a little bit better each day and fades with time. Could be gas too (due to the gas they pump into your abdominal cavity during surgery) and this too fades with time and walking can help sort this out.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
