Can someone please tell me what happens during your first consult?! And let's be honest, has anyone used ankle weights for their initial weigh in? Im thinking about it because my BMI is 37.8 and I want my insurance to cover the surgery!!!!!

ankle weights!!! hilarious.. i never heard of anyone doing that, but i wanna take off all jewelry, and hair when i have to get weighed in. during my initial consult. i met with the dietician who told me what i could expect to eat before and after the band, got lots of handouts and booklets. met with the surgeon who showed me an actual lapband and explained the entire procedure. i had a list of 50+ questions(not exaggerating) and he went thru and answered everyone. i even asked if he ever been part of a malpractice suit. hmph yes i did..but i had already googled him so i knew he wasnt. lol

hope this was helpful!

My frst consultation went alright I also had a gazillion questions! although he was in a hurry he did answer my questions. I have never heard of anyone putting weights on there ankles that would be considered cheating. You will have to get a referral from you primary doctor to okay surgery so they will want an EKG done, some blood tests, x-ray.. maybe less, maybe more depends on your medical history. You dr. will then give you a number to call a phycitrist which you will have to pay out of pocket to see for 1 day. So far I have have my first appoinment I have to lose 10lbs. by Feb. 24th. I see a phycitrist Feb. 17th.

Most insurances require a five year weight history. Also, if you have other co-morbidities that is considered as well. Good luck to you!

I hope all went well today. I saw Dr. Patel and Dawn 2 weeks ago and start all my pre-op appointments on Sunday. My tentative surgery date is 4/5/2012.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
