Over The Counter Meds...

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what types of over the counter meds we should stay away from? I have a wicked headache but always reluctant to take anything. I have no problems swallowing pills.

Should we stay away from Ibuprofen?

Thanks! Hope you are all doing well with your journey....

My doctor told me only Tylenol (Acetaminophen). I just bought some today as I always used Aleve and/or Advil. Never have been a fan of Tylenol.

She even said to switch now...as my surgery is scheduled for Feb 15th!

Mis73...does it matter? I am curious. I have found in reasearching and my doctor said that the aleve and advil is not good pre-op due to bleeding during surgery...and not good post-op as it can irritate the pouch easily?!

Yes, and that's why it matters :)

It's a big no-no pre-op because it's a blood thinner. They usually want you to stop all Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Advil, or any other meds that thin the blood 7-10 days before surgery. If she's asking about during the pre-op period the meds to stay away from are anything that thin the blood.

Post-op it's no more likely to irritate your stomach than it did before you banded- unless you take too big a pill and get stuck. In that case you could be in trouble. Most (not all) people who are banded can handle small pills, for instance tablets no bigger than an aspirin. Most drugs do come in a liquid form if you want to be safe.

Iburpofen and Advil are known for being a stomach irritant, but so as long as it's not getting stuck, you will have the same reaction to it you did before being banded.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
