SaucyBandster 23 Posted January 30, 2012 I am supposed to be banded this Friday the 3nd. I woke up this morning with a mild sore throat and a bit achey. I started slamming Emergen-C packs, echinacea and zinc. I am no longer allowed to have any medicines so I can't combat with that. I am SO worried. What if I get sick, will they postpone surgery???? I just had my EKG and labs on Friday and got the clear from my PCP to go ahead with surgery. Now I am so worried there will be a hiccup.
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! 12,703 Posted January 30, 2012 Yes, if you get sick they will postpone it. However, as much as you don't want to have to postpone it would be for the best. The last thing you need is to risk infection or pneumonia due to illness. I'll keep my fingers crossed you wake up tomorrow feeling great
armymom2012 51 Posted January 30, 2012 They told me to contact them asap if I got sick and that way I might be able to see my regular doctor for something to nip it in time for surgery, but to also let the surgeon know what is going on as well prior to the surgery. That way he will determine what action to take from there.
SaucyBandster 23 Posted January 30, 2012 I just called the nurse at the surgeons office and left a vm. Then I called my PCP and the girl at the front desk said she would talk to the Dr and see what she recommends. Uggg I SO don't want to be postponed
Jean McMillan 2,973 Posted January 30, 2012 I think the #1 issue will be whether or not your breathing is affected by this cold or whatever it is. They won't want to anesthetize you if it is. I wouldn't want to have my surgery postponed either but it's really for the best. Good luck, and keep us posted!
pugsx3 39 Posted January 30, 2012 I got a cold about 5 days prior to surgery, and was at my PCP for surgical clearance the day it started. He knew I did not want to postpone it, so he gave me an inhaler and an antibiotic to be safe - and he's normally pretty opposed to passing out antibiotics, which I normally agree with him on. I also called the surgeon, and said I'd be ok as long as my lungs were ok. Fortunately I did not have to find out, I was better within a couple of days! SaucyBandster 23 Posted January 31, 2012 It's not a cold. I am now seeing white pockets on my tonsils so I may have strep. Even tho my throat is only itchy and slightly scratchy. It isn't a major pain. I am so beyond upset I may have to push my surgery.

pugsx3 39 Posted January 31, 2012 If its strep, get on antibiotics tomorrow morning. You can still be ready for surgery Friday.
SaucyBandster 23 Posted January 31, 2012 So you CAN be on antibiotics and go into surgery? That won't affect anything like internal bleeding, etc?
pugsx3 39 Posted January 31, 2012 I thought they routinely give you antibiotics when you go into surgery to prevent infection. I know I've had them every time I went in for surgery - gallbladder, hysterectomy, and bunions on both feet as well as my lap band surgery
SaucyBandster 23 Posted January 31, 2012 Thanks so much! I will ask them tomorrow. I am crossing my fingers, eyes and toes that everything goes as planned.
armymom2012 51 Posted January 31, 2012 I was given Antibiotics through an IV after my surgery. Just make sure you let them know about this prior to surgery and let them decide what is best for you. You don't want to be over medicated by mistake.
Jean McMillan 2,973 Posted January 31, 2012 So you CAN be on antibiotics and go into surgery? That won't affect anything like internal bleeding, etc? They're probably going to put an antibiotic in your IV anyway. Antibiotics shouldn't affect internal bleeding. It's things like aspirin that increase bleeding.
