Sherilea,

My doctor moved me to soft foods after my 1 week post-op visit. But truly, I had some yogurt and fat-free cottage cheese before that visit. I also used sugar-free Jello to get through those times when I thought I wanted something but it wasn't time for a meal. I have lost 6 pounds in the 10 days since surgery so all is well.

Now, with soft foods, I have pretty much lost my appetite. Hope you have the same result.

Hang in there!

Linda

Thank you, I want so much to be successful but I don't think I fully understood the "extreme hunger" aspect of it. Maybe i will try a little tiny bit of cottage cheese or yogurt tomorrow...Thank you...

Just be careful that you use a blended yogurt or one without fruit. You don't want the yogurt with fruit on the bottom.

I hear you- I had surgery last Thursday, and finally last night I broke down and had a Protein Drink, I was so hungry! I couldn't stomach the thoguht of more chicken broth, Jello or popsicles, LOL. I think it's good, just go slow and if it irritates you, stop, LOL.

We were allowed to add Protein Drinks to the Clear Liquids regimen the day we got home. My doctor's definition of clear liquids, oddly, included orange juice and Tomato juice, and Protein drinks. We must have the one of the most liberal doctors in the country. No pre-op diet, one day of truly clear liquids, and soft foods on Day 6. I'm not complaining!

I left the hospital hungry even though I wasn't suppose to have an appetite. My doctor does clear liquids 2 days, full liquids 2 weeks, mushies 2 weeks. Be careful cause you are healing and don't want to cause any damage. It will get better.

I tried a 1/4 cup of low fat cottage cheese and ate it really slow and chewed it to death...no problems but...still hungry...what the heck? Anyway, I go see the doc on Thursday so I will talk to them then but I will not go above what I have already tried. I certainly don't want to cause any problems to my healing stomach.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
