Coming Back After A Very Long Time!

Recommended Posts

Hi, I used to post occasionally on here many years ago but spent most of my time on another wls board. That board has taken to transferring threads on to their Facebook site without asking or telling the posters. I don't like that so have left!

So hi to any who remember me ( probably very few as I didn't post here much).

I am almost six years post op, lost all my excess weight in about 16 months and have maintained every since at below goal. One major blip when I had a leak in the tubing about 18 months ago but it was repaired and all has been fine ever since.

Planning on being a regular visitor here so will spend some time working the site out again, updating profiles, signatures etc.. The other site has put me off putting photos on though! Your mods tell me they don't put our stuff on FB but the other site has frightened me off doing that!

Even after being banded for so long, the support of a dedicated site is still so very important.

Kate

It is good to hear from someone that has been banded for so long and is still doing well. We need to hear the positive stories like these as it seems that too often it is only the people who are struggling that post which gives a very skewed negative portrayal of life post band.

hi Kate, I am a newbie on here and pre op with a pre op on Feb 14 and surgery date of Feb 28. It is wonderful to hear of your success!! We hear so little from "vets" more than five years post op. I look forward to learning more from you and others on here! And everyone needs support, no matter where we are on our journey! I know a lot of people love Facebook, but I work for a large co where there are too many who know each other's personal business...this surgery is a private matter for me. Only my closest friends and a small circle of family members know I am doing this....so this board is going to be very impotent to me as I work on my new lifestyle! I appreciate everyone on here for sharing your questions, concerns and responses! I've dieted unsuccessfully for 30+ years...like a lot of people who choose WLS, this is a decision I've made after a LONG period of study, prayer and hoop jumping with insurance! Your story makes me feel like I'm gonna see my goal one day, too!!

I am with you. I share with the people I want to share with!

So good to hear experiences from a veteran! Please keep posting. Anonymity is kept by me, this is a forum for us - no FB.

Love that you have done well for sooo long, gives me strength just reading this from you!!

Hi Kate - I remember you from the other wls site.

Glad to have you over here. I find this a much, much nicer site. Not all the bickering and put downs like the other forum.

Welcome Back! It is good to hear that you have made it so long with your band and had very few problems. It does seem that people get down to their goal and leave to live their new lives. :)

congrats to you!!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
