Can anyone help me with this? Has anyone faced this? If so, can someone tell me how their journey went from there. I have Cigna EPP, and that was the response I got.

Hi Tayloram,

The same thing happened to me and to a lot of people, though I'm surprised Cigna has tried to pull this on you. Cigna was one of the earliest carriers to approve the bane on a regular basis.

What I did was go through my carrier's internal appeal process--which resulted in repeated denials for this same reason--and then went through my state's external review process. I ultimately won and my carrier paid for my surgery last summer.

As time goes on fewer and fewer carriers can claim "investigational" since the band was approved by the FDA almost three year ago. IMO it's the weakest of all possible reasons to deny a request for banding.

My recommendation is to appeal it as many times as necessary. you will prevail in the end.

You can call Inamed and get them to send you some documentation that shows that the band is not investigational or experimental. Alot of people have gotten this response from their insurance and some have had it over turned when they submit the documentation from Inamed. Also check with the insurance again because I was told this by my insurance last year on April 18th and they satrted paying for the band on April 20th. After that I just got denied for othre reasons. I'm with a new insurance now waiting for approval. Good luck!

I was turned down by BC/BS in July of 2003. They said the band was considered "investigational". I kept checking back with my insurance company to see if their policy might change. Was I shocked when I called on Oct. 1st and was told that they just started approving it that very day. I was approved in a matter of hours and was banded on Oct. 28th.

So I am of the same opinion that it is just a matter of time before all insurances will be approving it. They cannot go on much longer saying that its experimental. There's just too much evidence to the contrary.

Good Luck, Diane

Hi Tayloram,

I am not sure how close Cinga EPP is to Cigna HMO, but I too was denied 3 days before surgery for the following reasons:

1. Lap-Band is investigational

2. Weight loss is slow

3. Requires too much after care

My surgeon called Cigna and asked to speak to someone with some authority. Ended up speaking with the medical director and went over all the reasons why Lap-Band was better for me than Gastric Bypass. Even though I would not have gone with Gastric Bypass, my surgeon told Cigna they were pushing me in that direction. My surgeon specifically noted the cost differences between the two surgeries, the fact that complications are higher with Gastric Bypass and how Lap-Band is better for young women still in child-bearing years. This medical director approved my Lap-Band and I had surgery as planned.

Maybe your surgeon could call Cigna EPP.

Good Luck.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
