Reasons For Medically Necessary Tummy Tuck

Recommended Posts

I'd really like to have a tummy tuck- however, i am not rich and I don't know if I could afford the procedure. yesterday I had a consult- my insurance will cover if I can constitute a medical reason. I have been told that if I have rashes I can provide that to my insurance company. Can anyone give me some examples of medical reasons they have been able to document?

My doctor was talking about this at our support meeting this week. He said to make sure you see your doctor and have prescriptions as proof that you are treating a rash. That way if you have to appeal it, you can show you have been trying to treat if for x amount of months.

it is very difficult to get it pid for unless you have several inches of overhanging skin which covers your pubic area. My doc told me no way and the TT is $7500. I cant decide. I self paid for my band so I hate to even think of putting out that much cash but I do have a roll of skin (empty spare tire) around my lower waist that I dont like. The plastic surgeon said there is no fat in it so I cant just lose more weight o get rid of it...

I just had my TT last week and insurance would only pay for the panniculectomy, not the Tummy Tuck part. I had well documented rashes due to the overhanging skin. The panniculectomy is where they remove just the overhang where the abdominoplasty (a.k.a. tummy tuck) they release the skin up to your sternum and pull it down as well as tighten your abdominal muscles. The panniculectomy was medical, the abdominoplasty is cosmetic. I did have some out of pocket expense for a portion of the surgery. You can look into CareCredit loans or, as I did, did a balance transfer to a 0% credit card and will pay it off in 21 months. I hated to burden my family with that expense but it was well worth it both on an emotional and a physical level.

good luck,

Katie
