Pre-op testing takes sooooo long

Recommended Posts

i consider myself a pretty patient woman, but today I found out that my MMPI (physch test) wont be until April. Which means I'm looking at another couple months at the soonest. I feel like i've been waiting soooo long, and now another few months before I even have the procedure. How long did all the Pre-op stuff take for you all?

Hey there Boston! Don't be discouraged, I've been tryin' to have this thing done for around 2 years now---but I was in the middle of a not-so-nice divorce too. My (ex) husband told me that if I continued to pursue the lapband surgery then I could pack my bags and go back to my mom and dad--that really hurt too. Anyway, God is good and He gave the grace to carry on. I lost my insurance and had to start the process all over again. Presently I have had my consult visit and psych evaluation. Just waitin' on BCBS insurance to send my surgeon a letter of approval. Well, hope to get to talk to you again. I wish you the best.

Hi,

My pre-op stuff took about five months "door to door". I started in September and am having surgery this Tuesday. It's a looong wait, but trust me, the last few weeks fly by at lightening speed. I can't believe my surgery is in three days!!! It is long, but hopefully, it will be worth the wait.

That's great! I wish you the best and I hope you will let me know how your procedure goes. Thanks for your response. I understand how long it can take as well but I'm in this thing for the long haul. Best wishes!

Hi Boston -

Yes, Pre-Op stuff is time consuming, isn't it!?!?!? I'm not sure what hoops you have to jump through, but I had to do the following:

sleep Study (2 of them before it was all said and done)

Psychological Evaluation

EKG

A whole lotta blood work

Visit with Nutritionist

It seems like I'm forgetting something, but that's the gist of it. Once that was completed I consulted with the surgeon and got insurance approval. From start to finish (well, I'm not banded just yet, but that's another story) it took me about 6 months. I'm sure I could have gotten it done sooner if I'd been more dedicated but it was expensive and time-consuming. Nature of the beast I guess.

Keep your chin up. It will be worth it! I am so excited to get my band and get on with my life!

Hey there Kayla! Thanks for your message--I just checked my mail this morning--a few minutes ago. Sorry to hear about your set back but I know it will all be worth it as I'm sure you agree. I'm excited for you. I have already had my consult visit over a week ago and now I'm just waitin' to hear approval from my insurance company. I too have had a sleep study--2 weeks ago and I still haven't heard the results of that one. Well, I wish you the best and I hope we can stay in touch through all this. May God bless you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
