mrsmyers2010 17 Posted January 25, 2012 Ever since I started working Protein shakes into my diet (official pre-op diet starts next Wednesday..!) I've had some serious stomach upset issues. I'm wondering if this is normal/ happens a lot, or no? I'm really worried considering I'm only having it as 1 Meal Replacement right now, I can't even imagine what next week will bring when I'm having them 3+ times a day! Please tell me this is normal and my tummy will adjust =/ (Sorry for the TMI!)
Joyce Real 21 Posted January 25, 2012 There are different kinds, do you have a problem with lactose?
mrsmyers2010 17 Posted January 25, 2012 There are different kinds, do you have a problem with lactose? Nope, never have before anyways. I was doing muscle milk lite but I thought it was really gross and it had too much sugar so I've now switched to GNC Lean shakes but no change, had the same trouble with muscle milk as I do now with the new shakes.< /p>
Will1970 18 Posted January 25, 2012 what flavor of the muscle milk? i had the light chocolate and its not too hot but the vanilla creme was pretty good. Wierd for me to say that i am a chocolate lover through and through.
zinhaa 363 Posted January 25, 2012 Good question about lactose. Try a different kind. I couldn't do Optifast because of it. Wendy
Will1970 18 Posted January 25, 2012 well, muscle milk is lactose free and the GNC you mix on your own so you dont need to add milk and if you are you could try an almond milk, which is pretty tasty.
Teri1129 1 Posted January 25, 2012 Doesn't sound normal to me. I am using GNC's Extreme 60 (vanilla); it's pricey but has a good flavor that is not chalky. Are you mixing with Water or milk? Most can be mixed with either. You might want to try other brands. Good luck.
jennxaz 6 Posted January 25, 2012 all that Protein gives me gas..not sure if that is what you are experiencing...maybe try some benefiber with it?
Amanda47 0 Posted January 26, 2012 Has anyone tried Isopure from GNC? Can I take that instead of mixing a shake?
Caygen 0 Posted January 27, 2012 A friend of mine have me an Isopure and I was wondering the same thing.

ginaquinn 0 Posted January 27, 2012 Hello there, I had the same problem plus along with it very embarrassing and uncomfortable gas. I had to find a Protein powder that I liked the taste of and one that would not cause............well you know :->). Slim fast did not agree with my stomach at all. I bought something called "Pure protein protein" powder at Target. It worked well for me. I don't know where in the country you live but I think the good news is that most stores will accept returns of even open items if you have a receipt. So I think maybe you can try different kinds of powders (return what does not work for you) until you find one that suits you. I will probably be starting my pre-surgery diet in a few week and it sounds like you will be too. I hope this works for you. Best of luck to all of us. PWoo10 7 Posted January 27, 2012 Just make sure it says Meal Replacement not meal supplement. I also filled up with gas and experience bloating when I first started pushing up the Protein. I have been doing it for almost a month now and my body is getting use to it. Gasx has been my hero through this transition.
DonnaMP 13 Posted January 27, 2012 I had the same problem. By a week after surgery I had diarrhea so bad I could hardly stand. I found out then I was allergic to artificial sweeteners. I switched to Boost High Protein and was fine after that. Thank God I only had to do a week of liquids after surgery. Everything was fine after I started eating real food. Glad my dr insists on NO Protein Shakes ever...unless of course you can't get anything else down.
Sandy Cohen 1 Posted January 27, 2012 hang in your body is not going to give you an easy time with any change at first. I like the bariatric shakes (brand is Bariatric Advantage) they taste the best have lots of flavors. I keep away from places like GNC they are overpriced and their Protein Shakes are often high in calories. Protein is not highly dissolvable to begin with so the more protein the harder to mix. I went through so many types of protein shakes and powders when I was pre-op so many of them taste awful. If you have aTrader Joe's nearby theres are great taste good lots of protein and cheap - powder in cans. Good luck!
