Pre-Op Diet Confussion

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for surgery on 1/30 and have been on the pre-op diet given to me by my doctor for a week. I see alot of people talking about being on a liquid diet before surgery. I am not on a liquid diet but have to stay under 40 carbs per day. I am sure all doctors are different but has anyone else had the same low carb diet instead of the liquid diet before surgery. I am scared i have missed something and want to be sure I am doing the right thing.

I didn't have to follow any diet before the surgery.

Did your Dr. specify how much weight he wants you to loose?

It's important you follow your dr's instructions.

My Dr., for the pre-op did not care what diet I followed. He did tell me I needed to loose a specified amount or he would postpone the surgery. I also had weigh in 2 days before.

I wasn't told i had to loose any weight before surgery. I am keeping my carbs below 40 as instructed to shrink my liver.

My doctor said to stick to 1500 calories and keep it low fat. That's pretty much what I've been doing all along anyway. I did notice, however, that it said no alcohol for 6 months prior. Guess I'm going to have to fudge a little on that one. I drink very seldom, but I have had a very few drinks in the last 6 months. Anybody else been told this?

Just like in the 6 weeks post surgery, I'm finding doctors have all kinds of different pre-op diets too.

As for myself, I wasn't told I had to lose a certain amount of weight, but I was put on Clear Liquids prior to surgery.

I would suggest you do what your specific surgeon asks and not worry about the rest. Everyone is different. :)

My surgeon doesn't require a preop diet, or preop weight loss, just Clear Liquids the day before. We have the same surgery date, by the way!!

It appears it all depends on the doctor. Good Luck!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
