Recommended Posts

New to the site! Ibanded on 12/9/11. My 1st post op appt was 1/19/12, I have lost 10.5lbs since surgery 6 weeks ago. My surgeon says I should have lost much more. I am following my diet and exersice instructions. What am I doing wrong? Help!

My post op diet consisted of liquids for the 1st 2 wks, pureed foods the next 2 wks, and finally soft foods such as eggs and deli shaved turkey the last 2 wks. I was limited to 1/2 cup of food per meal. When I got my iband it was empty. My surgeon said I didn't need an adjustment, that I need to get more comfortable with solid food first.

Everyone is different. If you lost a lot of weight before then that can effect how much you lost immediately afterwards and all sorts of other things have an impact. So long as you are following the instructions and doing your exercise then don't worry.

The goal is to lose the weight. The rate at which you do it doesn't matter as it's not a race.

amazing how every surgeon is different, my surgeon only required 1 week of pre op diet, stated to me it wasnt about losing weight it was about shrinking my liver so he could place the band properly. my surgeon also only wants me to lose 1 to 2 lbs per week, if I am losing more than that he will not give an adjustment and if I am losing too much he will unfill some. he also states for me not to exercise or diet. he says to eat what I want but control my portions. he also states not to chew chew chew my food, he says if you are chewing constantly you will be able to eat more and other surgeons require you to chew 20 times before swallowing. so dont be discouraged, you are doing fine, a loss is a loss no matter how much it is, some just lose faster than others. good luck

You were on the same diet I'm on. (I am so sick of all liquids lol).

Honestly, I don't see why your surgeon said that. You have lost more than 2 pounds a week. Think of it like this- if you continue at this rate you'll lose more than 100 pounds in a year!

Sounds like you're doing pretty dang good to me ;)

I had a small weight loss between visits once, and my Dr said "as long as you're moving in the right direction, that's progress!"

When I was banded, it was 7-10 days of liquids, then 7-10 more of soft foods, and then onto solids. If you are having solids, make sure you are avoiding the liquid calories (except 2-3 glasses of milk a day) How long are you staying full after you eat your portion?

I'm hungery for 2-3 hours after each meal. When hunger does strike I feel as if I'm playing the waiting game until the next meal. Its a horrible feeling. P.S. Thanks to everyone who responded to my original post, your support really helps.

My dr told me that if I didn't stay full for 3.5 -4 hours, I needed a fill.

WHAT?!?!?!?! 10lbs is fantastic. Don't listen to your Dr. crazy talk!!! Be proud of that 10 pounds. When you go to the grocery pick up a 10lb bag of potatoes and that should put into presepctive how much you are NOT carrying around anymore. I just got my first fill. I went in beating myself mentally for not losing a lot of weight. I only lost 4 pounds in 4 weeks. My doc told me the first 6 weeks is for HEALING not losing. I didn't even have a fill yet. Well since yesterday's fill I lost 3 pounds. I am sure most of it was Water I was retaining. I know we want to lose fast and compare ourselves to others but my Doc said that he is happy if I lose 1 pound a week. I did tell him that for a fat person 52lbs in a year is not cutting it lol...But then he said well a person needing to lose 100lbs will get to their goal in 1 1/2 yr-2 yrs. We need patience onces we are properly filled I am sure the weight will come faster. Congrats on your 10lbs. and don't forget to get your fills. Good Luck!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
