Thyroid Cancer And Lapband....

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if anyone here has been diagnosed with thyroid Cancer and removed. If so, has had the lapband surgery afterwards and how succesful it's been for you.

I had mine removed in 2004 and doing well. I know metabolism plays a big part with thyroid and losing weight. I am scheduled for lapband surgery a week from today, the 27th. My doctor didn't see any contraindications to both, but I never asked if he has had anyone with a simialar situation and how things went for the patient.

I just had my yearly physical and blood tests and my thyroid test came back abnormal, Dr. told me I have hyperthyroid. But wants me to take another blood test in about a month and see the outcome of that one before she decides on any medication. I never had any problems with my thyroid before.

Was just talking to my sister she had gastric by pass surgery and after that they found out she has an under active thyroid....she has to take medication....however the doctor did say it is much harder to lose weight.....so the medication should help.....my one was fine got bloods done and it was under active....they put me on medication and it set my heart racing...took me off the medication, repeated the bloods and then it was fine....

My mother, sister and four of my aunts have thyroid problems....seems to be genetic.....saying that all of them are over weight ( except my sister due to her by pass) ....plus all of them and myself and my grandmothers all had their gall bladder out which can be genetic....seems we need to eat little and often......prior to the band I was eating a lot....but now try to stick to slow releasing foods' low GI foods which seem to work :)

Thank you both. I too ,was diagnosed years before with an underactive thyroid as was my mother, her sister, and my two sisters' who by the way are thin.

I'm very familiar with the fact that being hypothyroid can slow down the metabolism in some people. However, my concern is with those who have had their thyroid entirely removed and are taking medication who are considered hyperthyroid. Again, thank you. It is what it is and I'm sure I will see much improvement, perhaps slower then other's but it'll be better then not having it at all.

I have a hypothyroid second to Hashimotto Disease.

I still have my Thyroid, but it's not in good shape.

I just wanted to let you know that we have a Hypothyroid thread or 2 on this site.

Just type in Hypo thyroid Bandsters, and it should come up.

Hi

I don't have Thryoid Cancer but I do have Hashimotos disease, which has similar effects. My own body ate away my thryoid. I was banded about 12 days ago. I lost 7kg (about 15 lbs) in the first week. I personally beleive that there is a link between no thryoid and sugar etc cravings too. I still craved a bit the first week but get that over with and its ok. Some doctors won't operate on people with thryoid problems as it is considered a weight related illness. (at least for mine.) I have lost large amounts of weight before with no thryoid, but just never kept it off. I beleive that for people like us, exercise is even more important. I am now not feeling as tired, my memory is better, at least i think. Just remember that medication reviews will be more important now to maintain as the effects of too much medication are just as bad as not enough.

Aussikiwi, sorry to hear about your thyroid or lack thereof. I have heard that before. That little "innocent" butterfly, called the thyroid gland is a very powerful organ with or without it.

I think you're right re: exercising for people who have been diagnosed with any form of dysfunctional thyroid disease, CA, hypo/hyperactive,,,, etc. Sounds like you're on the right track and I'm 3 days away of finding out. Thank you.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
