Liquid Diet Cheating Question

Recommended Posts

My surgeon has patients go on restrictive Atkins diet - less than 20g carbs per day.... all lean Proteins, and cheese and dairy.... this diet is started 2 weeks before surgery, there is no "required" weight loss, but they are up front about shrinking the liver....

Ugg - I would love a piece of cheese right about now LOL

I am so sick of these Optifast shakes. My stomach just churns on them and it sounds like I have aliens trying to escape.

Soon I will be on the other side tho :-)

YOU will get used to the low to no carbs.............

PRIOR to my LB I was a carb lover!!!

now I get physically sick if I eat carbs.......haven't had any Pasta in three years!

I have had a little rice, a few spoons of mashed potatoes.

NO Bagels, donuts, etc.................and absolutely NO pizza dough!

Good Luck!!!

I went for my pre-op weigh in today- I had to lose 4 lbs and I lost 12! So happy! I was on the 2 shakes/1 small Protein & veggies meal but the shakes gave me (sorry, this is gross) diarrhea, so I only had 1 per day, and substituted an egg white omelet w 1 slice ff cheese, 2 c. lettuce & 1 TBSP fat free dressing. They told me today I could go back on 1200 cals./day up till surgery. I feel like I've died and gone to heaven. Today I had 4 oz NY strip, 1 c whole wheat angel hair Pasta w sauteed mushrooms. I feel full and GREAT! The surgeon said I could! Yay!!!!!!!!

My insurance requires 6 months of medically supervised weight loss before they will approve/cover the cost of surgery. This avoids the need for a rapid weightloss liquid diet for me. My surgeon's explanation keeps me motivated. A fatty liver is a friable (bleeds easily) and a large liver. If he can't get around the liver to see the stomach or see into the abdomen because of bleeding from the liver he has to stop the surgery. The liver is the first organ to gain fat and the first to lose it when you drop the pounds. That keeps me motivated to get the 10% of my current weight off. Maybe that will help some of you struggling with strict pre-op diets. Best of luck to all of you! You can do this!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
