Throwing Up And Often

hey there. i was banded in may of 2011 and had an unfill over a month ago because i was throwing up Water when i'd try to drink it in the morning.

does anyone else throw up often? since the unfill i still have trouble getting things down and keeping them down - but i also don't feel much of a restriction in the evening hours.

i had Breakfast this morning, a scrambled egg, and about 4 small bites into it i swear i somehow threw up more egg than i actually consumed. it was a very intense wave of nausea. am i alone here? it's kind of freaking me out a bit just how nauseous i seem to sometimes get when i first eat. am i taking bites that are too big? do i just need to stick with liquids for my first couple meals? does it sound like my band has slipped? i definitely don't think it's slipped and i'm wondering if maybe i should stick with mushy/soups for a couple of days, or maybe even every day with a real meal at dinner or something.

anyway, i'd appreciate any feedback anyone has... i have gained over 10lbs since getting this unfill so i am not willing to get it further loosened. oh blah what the hell is wrong with me!?

sounds like you need to drink warm liquids for a couple of days, you are probaly swollen from the vomiting. if you can keep Water down, then it is not a slip. i can't eat in the mornings. i have a cup of hot coffee first thing in the morning to "loosen" up the band as i am super tight in the AM. then i have a Protein Shake mid morning. then i can eat food around lunch time. during that time of the month, i am super tight so i have liquids for 2 days and then i am fine. can you eat food in the afternoon/evenings?

If you have to go for a slight unfill, "and I know you don't want to." get unfilled while sitting up with your leggs hanging over the side.

Have a glass of Water handy, and wen you start swallowing. they start to withdraw, When you feel the Water just drop right threw, and into your stomach, give a thumbs up means your good to go.

A lot of people have more trouble in the am than the pm. Try sticking to liquids for a day and then soft foods , if you have irritated your band or are swollen that should help. Start off the morning with a warm drink. If you are able to eat after that fine if not have a Protein shake instead and have a proper meal at lunctime when the band should be looser.

Also scrambled eggs are notoriously difficult. Rather try a soft poached egg instead - it goes down a lot easier.

I cant eat scrambled eggs at all, no matter what time of day, so i dont eat them. I always start off by having tea or coffee when i first wake up and will only attempt to eat at least 45 mins later, Hot Drinks seem to relax the band first thing in the morning for some of us.

For me, I Can't eat anything in the morning. I have a Protein smoothie mixed in the blender with some berries, etc, and I have to take small sips with that, and have it gurgle as it passes through the band.

As you say, My band loosens up during the day also, but I prefer to stay with liquids of very smooth foods for lunch such as Soups, etc.

I have read many posts here over the last year from people who say they can still eat what they want, and mention things like Burgers at McDonalds, and french Fries, etc, etc. If it works for them, then that's fine.

I am at the point with this surgery, that the types of foods I eat has greatly changed, and if I did attempt to continue with them I feel I would be a mess!

I find that when it comes to eating and choosing foods, it is like walking through a minefield sometimes.

I'm by no means saying this is you, (how couild I possibly know) but I have noticed there are some people who come and go here that complain about "Vomiting" and not being able to keep food down, and then I read from people here that it appears they just cannot let go of their past eating habits and choices of foods they consume.

Then they abuse their band, which becomes irratated to the point they cannot keep Water down, and complain and feel they need a unfil.

Totally agree.. maybe its an age thing :)

I had a fish burger from Bk a couple weeks ago. I ordered it without the bun. I must say it was like comfort food! But I can't even think about a burger and fries! If someone goes to McD's or Bk, I might have a fry or 2, never a burger and never a whole order of fries, not even a small. The thought revolts me! But I guess a lot of folks can do it. I sometimes look at pizza on TV and think, yumm. I know that if I even bought one, I would probably have 2 bites and be done. As far as your problem of throwing up, has the surgeon checked to make sure you are not slipped? When my band had slipped in Oct. I couldn't keep anything down, even with an unfill. I had a fill on Dec 9th, I was thinking 6cc was too much but then I noticed I wasn't making good choices and eating way too fast. I have tried to eat Breakfast but it just doesn't go. My band, like others, is too tight to get in eggs and it took me almost an hour on Sunday to eat oatmeal with rasins. I usually have a Protein Shake with ff milk in the am. I try to bring a snack like almonds, eat half a Protein Bar, string cheese to snack on the ride home from work cause I'm hungry when I get home and notorious for snacking. Good luck and don't think it slipped just try new foods that may work better or at different times. Eggs for breakfast?

Eggs are on the top of my list of things I can no longer tolerate. I tried them 3 times in the first 18 months post-op, made 3 different ways, and threw up every time.

wow i just wanted to thank you all for your replies! i had no idea scrambled eggs were notoriously difficult to get down... i'll remember that one! all of your replies have helped and given me some things to think about. thank you so much for the support!

Without doubt, my band is stamped RUN BY DEMONS! Morning tightness(check), NO hunger (check), had it for lunch, won't go down for dinner (check). I am all over the place. Tonight, I got a Water bubble and had to run from the room. This happens as if I took in to much air and air came from below to create the bubble in my throat. Since I got this in 09 I have been very happy with it, but it is fickel, fickel, FICKEL! Climate changes from cool to hot, I am on liquids (learned the hard way). I don't really feel tightness, I just know some mornings not to try to eat and do coffee or hot tea. I haven't come to an understanding of "restriction"; I know it doesn't take as much for me to feel statisfied. I have lost the weight with next to no exercise and would reach goal if I kicked the sugar out of my life again. There only a few foods I can't eat, but I have found that there isn't much I want to eat anymore. In the begining I loved chicken/tuna salad, deli meat & cheese or a grilled chicken breast for lunch ...NO! Everyday is a struggle to find something to eat and it's doing a job on me. To add to my worries, I had to get upper dentures and learn how to chew yet again. My weight is holding but I don't think I get enough calories in daily and I work hard for the Protein. Greek yogurt is helping and I don't want smoothies or Protein Drinks. I am at a loss, but I did learn that if I have a bad day and stuff comes up I head to the liquids for 2 or 3 days to let the swelling go down, When I had this problem summer of '10 I didn't and I got tighter and tighter and had to get an unfill and climb back up. Each person is different and so is each person. Listen to the band, if it says no morning food, don't try it. The band knows and it is in controll.

My band doesn't do mornings either. coffee for Breakfast (and i found that i can put a sugar free carnation instant breakfast in it with my creamer) and way later some lunch. I wasn't able to drink Water first thing in the mornings, but now find that i can. I am still very nervous to eat regular food first thing; too many sliming issues...and that's gross. Listen to what your body and band are telling you. you probably don't need an unfill, just something warm in the mornings to drink...

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
