My Experience Being Pregnant With The Lap Band . . .

Recommended Posts

Kcortez: You don't have to gain much weight. Try to keep it at 20 pounds or less. Contact your surgeon to find out if there is a network in place to support women who are pregnant post-WLS. My H.M.O. (Kaiser) has a specific group to help bariatric patients stay on track by monitoring bloodwork and giving guidance regarding eating and exercising. I found that the tools I developed to handle cravings and whatnot after surgery were invaluable to me during the pregnancy. Remember that being pregnant is as much an excuse for women to eat poorly as it is to eat properly. If you eat properly, adding just 200 or 300 calories a day to feed the baby, you'll be fine -- heck you might find that after you give birth you're lighter than you were before you got pregnant.

I am 39 years old...banded July 26, 2009. I met my goal of 100lbs of weight loss. I became pregnant in January, 2012...with TWINS!!!! I am 29 weeks and I have gained 28 pounds, but I am pretty miserable right now. In the last week, things are getting stuck and I am only consuming liquids. My drs want me to gain 15 pounds before delivery so that my boys will get bigger. I will deliver early at 36 because of the high risk twin pregnancy I am having. I don't mind gaining more weight for them. They have to be 5 lbs each in 7 weeks...so I have to fatten up a little more. Normal twin pregnancies suggest the average woman gain 40-45 pounds and I will be on target with that, but will have to havepost-204619-13813134242022_thumb.jpg post-205860-13813134242184_thumb.jpg my band adjusted. My lapband dr says he is only going to take 1/2 out. I am happy with that. I cried making the phone call but I know it is for the boys. Prior to getting pregnant, I was so happy with my weight loss. I will have 1/4 of the 1/2 put back in four weeks after the c-section and then go from there. I am so thrilled my dr is not taking it all out. I don't need it all out, just loosened a little. Thick Soups are giving me problems and that is when I knew I needed to get the adjustment.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
