Post Op And Hungry

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow I will be post op 11 days and I am so hungry. I have eaten more today then I have in the last two weeks. I even cheated alittle and had some string cheese and ice cream. I need to eat real food! I am supposed to be eating inbetween full liquid diet and mushies but I am not sure what that consists of??? I know that I am in bandsters hell right now I just have to figure out how to get through it. I need to chew something.

I know it is hard but it will get easier. I am on week 3.5 and can try soft food as tolerated. I started with scrambled eggs and egg whites with cheese in them and have been able to try little things since like healthy choice quesadilla and spring rolls and a few other things. It has definately gotten better but it is still hard watching my family eat pizza and other good food when I am eating Soup and eggs. Good luck!

I would recommend low fat cottage cheese or ricotta. String cheese is a solid not a mushie. And I'm sure you know this but ditch the ice cream it is cream with sugar added.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like what my doc calls "full liquids". That consists of all the clear diet stuff but also :

Skim or 1% milk

Low calorie Yogurt Dannon Light’n Fit®

Strained cream Soups made with fat-free milk

sugar-free pudding

fruit juice

Soft melon or pureed soft fruit

Canned fruit in juice, rinsed and drained

Diluted oatmeal or grits

Diluted cream of wheat

pureed carrots, green Beans, or peas

Sherbet

I may be wrong, but it sounds like maybe this is what you're talking about?

Im only 10 days in and i feel the same way..Im so hungry and aggravated. I get full drinking the liquids but a little while later im hungry again. I dont know what to do. I thought about starting mushies a little early. can you do that? Another thing I lost 10 pounds the first 5 days after surgery which Im thinking might have been Water weight.. Now my weight is going between 263 and 264 and not really doing anything is that normal? Help

mushies= slightly runny mashed potatoes with "i cant believe its butter", oatmeal, Protein Shakes, scrambled eggs, maybe some tuna salad with light mayo ( not on bread).

On day five, post op, I was allowed mushies. That was today. I had Wendy's chili. This was suggested by my surgeon. I only ate about three tablespoons but it was great. I was full and satisfied after that.

The whole idea of following the liquid diet>mushies>solid food is to allow your stomach to heal. Yes each doctor has different time frames as to how long he wants you to stay on each stage, but why risk not following their guidelines. Its not as if any one of us would end up starving .. you need to be more determined to make the band work in the long run rather than satisfying short term wants. Find something to do when u are hungry, most of us got where we are/were by eating for other reasons other than hunger .. might be an idea to get some sugar free sweets to suck on to stave off any cravings like ice cream.

If you allowed tea or coffee with skimmed milk it helps in between meals, or add skimmed milk to low fat yoghurt to make your own drinks.< /p>

I made my own veg Soup which was very filling which would be ideal for moving on from liquids ..

good luck with the hunger !

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
