Hi all!! So I made a Protein Shake smoothie for dinner, , I like to add ice and about a tablespoon of Peanut Butter and blend to make it really thick. I completely forgot and started sipping through a straw. I didn't realize till about halfway through and then I stopped. Now I remember the nutritionist saying not to drink through a straw because you will get too much of a drink at once. But I was sipping really slow and didn't have any negative reaction to the straw. Is it normal that I can drink through the straw? I am also not at full restriction yet,, maybe that's why??

I always drink thru a straw. And it's been over 2 yrs for me. My doc or nurse never told me not to. I've never had anything bad happen yet.

I'm the same as Maci, no one ever told me not to use a straw. I was using a straw the day after surgery actually. I've heard of others being told not drink with straws for various reasons though.

I use a straw because I tend to gulp and/or stack without it. I say if it's working for you, then keep on!!

I was told not to use a straw. But while on vacation last week, I totally forgot and used one several times. I did not seem to have any issues. I think a straw can add to gas, but I really haven't had any major gas problems.

I was also told not to use straws, I was just banded 5 days ago and I have used a straw a few times. It really helps me drink my Protein Drinks. Can't do with out my Straws!

When I was banded my surgeon said no straws at all.

So I go up for a Barium Swallow, and what do they have me do ? Suck it threw a straw...

The Dr. about turned Blue, "I laughed to myself" he said he was going to have them fired. He was tired of there mistakes.....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
