I was told to crush mine. I bought a crusher at drug store. I take my pills with a tso of pudding or Apple sauce. Check with your pharmacy about the the pills you take there are some pills you can not take crushed.

If you never had a problem with taking pills before surgery, you probably will still be able to take meds. I have no issues with taking my meds and Vitamins.< /p>

My surgeons recommendations are nothing bigger than an aspirin. I do chewable vitamins, crush my prilosec, and my B1 i pour out of the capsule and mix in Jello. Always check with your pharmacy what can and cant be crushed, as well as following your Dr. Orders.

I was told not to swallow anything bigger than a baby aspirin, so I use a pill splitter to subdivide my meds, which are all tablets. After trying to swallow an antibiotic capsule and ending up in the ER twice in 24 hours because it corroded my stoma while slowly dissolving, I insist on antibiotics in liquid form.

Some meds (like time-release formulas) should not be cut up or crushed. Your pharmacist or doc can tell you if any of your meds fall into that category.

I take my Vitamins in chewable form and use calcium chews because I absolutely cannot swallow a Calcium pill - too big even when cut up.

My ability to swallow pills has changed as my restriction as increased. As a new post-op, I could swallow anything. Nowadays I have to follow each pill with at least 4 ounces of Water, and I have to take my evening meds at least one hour before I go to bed so that they have a chance to move on through my upper GI system.

Someone here posted the above link. It contains a detailed list of medications that should not be crushed.

Workinprogress, Wal-Mart has a liquid Calcium by wellness that doesn't taste bad and it is inexpensive. Don't wait any longer to get on your calicum, especially if their is a history of osteoporosis in your family. Since we eat less, be sure to get your supplements to stay healthy.

Also, I found Gummy calcium citrate at walmart- then I can just eat it as a snack, lol.

Also, my dr. advises against children's Vitamins, but I've seen others say they just do 2- any thoughts?

Do what YOUR doctor advises, or ask him why he says that and make an informed decision. Mine just says do a Multi-Vitamin. I do an adult chewable.< /p>

I bought a pill cutter and cut them if they are bigger than an asprin. Itake chewable adult gummy vitamins so no need to cut those.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
