I have recently started the process to get the lap-band. I'm not sure if insurance will cover it yet, but according to my surgeon if you have a positive sleep study my insurance company will cover the surgery 99% of the time. Well, I just found out my sleep study was positive. I have to go back for a CPAP mask next week. I also have high blood pressure and hypothyroidism. I'm 5'6" and 235 pounds. I've been on countless diets of my own before as well as diets such as Weight Watchers, Slim Fast, and Special K. I feel like the lap-band is my only choice and the last resort. But I'm unsure about whether I should get it or not. I know that this is only a decision that I can make, but I feel really lost. Does anyone have any advice?

One the one hand, I feel like I haven't tried hard enough in my diets. On the other hand, if future diets fail I may end up even heavier and more unhealthy. I'm so conflicted.

All I can say is that it was the best decision I've ever made in my entire life! I'm only 36 pounds down, and I already feel so different! You sound like the perfect candidate for this surgery. I feel like it's one of the best things we can do for ourselves. We shouldn't be ashamed of caring about our health, or wanting a better lifestyle. Good luck!

I am going to do it on Feb. 8th. I have been on diets all my life and never could stick to one permanently, so I'm excited to do this. The surgeon told me today that my only regret will be that I didn't do it 10 years ago!

I was not "excited" about the band itself and was very worried about many things before I got it. I was banded December 28th and so far I think I made the right decision. It is definitely comes with a process that will change the way you think about food and certain habits. I believe it was a very healthy choice for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
