Pre-surgery, Fighting Depression And Gambling Addiction

Recommended Posts

I've been stuggling with depression and anxiety for 10 plus years and am wondering how this will play into getting the lapband surgery in May 2012.

I also am a compulsive gambler and attend GA which makes me more depressed. With these I also have been suicidal. Is there any advice out there or thoughts on how the lapband may affect me. I've heard some get depressed with the lapband and I don't need any more depression.

On the other medical side of this, I have diabetes and only 1 kidney.

Any opinions/advice on "if the lapband is right for me"?

I am on medication for depression and anxiety and have had no problems with it since getting banded. I think exercising and making myself get out there has kept me from having trouble. I also know that as the pounds go down I get happier! I do admit it is a little harder at the moment with the gloomy weather but if I get out and take a walk it helps.

Thank you for your reply. Walking and getting out is good advice, I'm starting to do that. Seeing the lbs. go down will be motivating. I guess I'll just have to be careful to keep on the up side even when it goes slow.

quit worrying about the "whole" picture. look at the list of things you have been asked to do. do one at a time.

I would say most of us have some sort of compulsion. Most compulsive people trade one for another. you go to GA so you know to turn it over, right?

think positively and move forward. you are no worse or better than anyone else in the situation.

everyday that you walk, eat healthy, think positively will grow and before you know it success is a sure thing.

keep posting - it really helps!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
