1 Yr Post Band, Struggling To Keep Food Down

Recommended Posts

Hi all after being banded 1 yr ago and still having issues w keeping food down, esp protien I decided to join support group and see who had similar experiences. I started out at 292 pre band, but at my highest wgt yrs ago was 350, now 1 yr out I am 177, which at 41 I weigh was I did at age 11. Anyway, I never had trouble losing weight after surgery esp once I had my 5th fill in june. However, I have issues w keeping food down esp protien, sometimes Soup, even ice cream comes back up, just depends I guess as it is not always happening. I eat 1 afternoon meal, and try to sip on something in the morning, but there are days I puke 5 times. I have even gotten up in middle of night, not having had anything for 5 or more hrs and thrown up liquid w coffee ground looking stuff in it. Sorry to be graphic. Also, I had more energy at 350 than I do now, I am often lightheaded, dizzy and blacked out once...i am sure its due to lack of nutrients. Not sure if anyone had this, if so how did you fix. Thx

You really need to see your dr. The coffee ground stuff isn't normal at all. I've been banded 14 months and have never thrown up.

No, never. I've been stuck really bad a few times and wished I could but I haven't. That coffee ground stuff is scary.

My mom had similar symptoms "throwing up a coffee grind like substance". It turned out that she had an upper GI bleed. Very dangerous. I am very concerned about you. Please go see your doctor immediately.

I have heard this too with the coffee ground symptom. If anything call the surgeon you had and explain your symptoms, get some advice from a medical professional

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
