Liver Shrinking Diet For A Week

I had a pretty... what is the best word. Not so good relationship with my doctor's office staff while I was going through my pre-approval tests. They told me a bunch of half truths along the way and the date kept pushing back the date and adding additional appointments and tests and not giving me explanations or reasons why, which caused a lot of schedule hiccups. I finally went to my last pre-op appointment and they apparently held a day for me a week from now instead of doing the two weeks away scheduling... they also rushed me out of the office after we did the group signing of legal documents, which was awesome, because it meant less wait time, but also funny.

Anyway, I found out today I have one week of the liver shrinking diet, and since it is only 1 week I don't get a meal at the end of the day, which makes me a little sad, because artificial sweetners make me want to gag. We have to do what we have to do though. Anyone else on Protein Shakes only right now leading up to surgery? I bought a plain one at the office thinking I could doctor it up with something salty but it is too gross for that so I ended up adding a 15 calorie stevia sweetned drink mix and a dollop of homemade unsweetned strained yogurt instead of skim milk.

I was totally expecting a two week wait, so one week seems like no time at all... yick on these shakes though.

I am 3 days out now, but I was only on a liquid diet for a week myself. I was VERY jeolous of the people on here that were able to eat a meal a day, but that being said it does prepare you more for the diet after surgery. So if I were you I would look at it as a way to start dealing with eating habits and emotions. I hated those dang shakes but it has been four days since I have been able to have one and now I cant wait till tomorrow when I can drink one.

I'm trying. I gave in tonight though and had a handful of steamed organic string beans... like 5. I hate sweet stuff and had to get the shake taste out of my mouth for fear of vomiting :/ I think Clear Liquids will be easier. My doctor's office only lets us use one shake that you can only buy at their office for the liver shrinking diet. I am wondering if I should call tomorrow about the string beans... *sigh*

Can you have chicken broth? Get the fat free kind. It's clear, has Protein, and def isn't sweet. Unjury.com also has chicken flavored Protein Powder that you can use with warm Water, or unflavored Protein can be mixed in as well, as long as the liquid is below 130 degrees.

I had the 2 week diet and failed at it miserably but my liver still shrank enough for the surgery even though I ate regular food. I just ate a lot less and absolutely no fast food and only low calorie low carb low sugar foods. So lean meat and veggies. I tried the shakes but they were super sweet and made me gag. I even had to quit my insulin shots because my blood sugar kept falling to like 50. I am now 5 days post op and still kinda sore but excited. Its all worth it for the end result.

I'm still sticking with it. I've had green Beans one more time. The first shake gave me the runs like no ones business and the first replacement shake gave me a pretty bad rash... shake 3 seems to be working okay though.. thank goodness. Worried about how things will be for the first few weeks post op.

I got banded on Tuesday 1/10/12. I did the protien shakes, Jello and broth for the 2 week pre-surgery diet. I Cheated a bunch of times but not bad. I still lost 15 pounds in two weeks. I found that muscle milk is the best tasting and has the most protien. Today is my last day of clear liquids and tomorrow I can go back to the full liquid diet. i cannot wait to eat a yogurt in the morning. LOL. laugh.png

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
