I'm having surgery tomorrow and I'm nervous about the pain when I come home. Realistically-- how long until I can do normal things. Fix dinner for the kids, do laundry, etc.. I've had three kids but have really never had surgery before. Please advise,

Jenn

It's different for everyone, but I went back to work on day 2 after surgery (I spend a lot of time at my desk). I was only on Tylenol for pain. I think I had a much easier time of it than most- I was lucky not to have the gas pains.

I was walking my dog on day 3 or 4 but I was careful not to do any heavy lifting for a couple of weeks. Also, bending over is painful and I was advised by the doctor's office to try to do as little bending as possible.

Hi Jenn, welcome!

As the previous poster said, everyone is different. I was moving around my house pretty well by day 2. I took 1 week off from work, did half time the next week. I caught a cold right around the time I was in the hospital, that did not aid my recovery.

Laundry? Well, I'd say at least a week for moving loads from washer to dryer, more for carrying them, unless you split them into tiny parcels to carry them. But reaching into the dryer will not be easy.

Stay on top of your pain with the pain meds provided. When you get to level 3, take more.

Just remember when cooking for your kids, popping things into your mouth will be off limits now! That might be a challenge.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

just like everyone said. everyone is different. i was pretty sore after my band. of course it didnt help that i got my period (tmi?) just a few days afterwards so i think that added to the pain. i would be careful tho. i was 2 days post op and i thought i was fine so i went to take a shower and ended up banging on the wall for my mom. i was dizzy, light headed, and could barely walk. i just tried to do to much to soon. so take things slow. i would say a week after and i was bad to normal.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
