Question For Diabetics

Recommended Posts

I just began the process to get banded. I have a question for anyone who has diabetes and has a band. I have type 1, however, I also have significant insulin resistance since my last pregnancy . While I know that I will always be on insulin, I was wondering for those type 2's (or anyone in my situation) how long it took before your glucose numbers dropped. I am having a super difficult time getting to my pre-surgery goal because of the amount of insulin I have been taking. That being said, it does not seem to be much of a concern with my WLS team. The main goal of the surgery is for me to kick the insulin resistance. They have been trying to get me to consider RNY, as it is almost immediate with that surgery, but I DO NOT want something so invasive. So, basically, I am just wondering how long after being banded that it took for your glucose numbers to drop....? Thanks!

Mine have dropped, in the couple of months I have been banded. I have cut my meds in half. But I have not had my a 1 c yet since being banded.

I was a type 2 diabetic but with extreme insulin resistance i would say that around 6 months i was back to normal i slowly reduced meds as i had heard that metformin if withdrawn too early can impede weight loss so i only have just given up taking it ..

good luck i am sure your resistance will be helped by the band.

I was able to cut my insulin in half or most time I only take a couple of units. I have an insulin pump and I noticed I was getting low a lot, so I did have to adjust that too. I haven't had an A1C test since surgery, but for the first time ever I'm curious to see what it is;). Good luck with your surgery, I think it will do wonders for your diabetes!!!

I am a Type 2 Diabetic.

Someone once told me that FAT is your enemy when your a diabetic, and is the cause of Insulin Resistance. It creates a barrier around the cells and blocks absorption.

Don't know how true that is, but I focus on that as motivation.

I was taking up to 60 units of Lantus every evening, plus Oral meds during the day, some before every meal.

I have been off ALL MEDS since September.

Coincidentally, my body fat % has also dropped within acceptable ranges.

My cholesterol and triglycerides are all within normal limits, and I am on 1/2 doses with these, mainly because I also have cardiac issues.

Type 1 is vastly different from Type 2, but reducing your body fat will lower your resistance, meaning less insulin.

my a1c before surgery was 6.3...since surgery it is now a 5.8 (normal) -- with your weightloss, your numbers will go down :)

Thank you for the input! I am excited to get my numbers back in range. I never had an issue with resistance until after my second pregnancy, but from having back to back pregnancies, I gained too much and now I just cannot seem to lose any of it. My endo calls it "double diabetes", and that is just something I never want to hear again! I too am on an insulin pump. Right now, my A1C is 9.3. For years, it was typically between 6-6.5, except for when I was a non-compliant teen and rebelled against taking insulin.

Question for the other pumper... is it easy to change your site around the band port? I am hoping its not too much of an issue. I would hate to mess with the port.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
