So have you seen this procedure done on others? What should we expect? I am seriously nervous. I know my fiance is tire of hearing about this surgery, but I can't help it. Any information you know off hand, please share.

I still have til the 19th, but I am nervous too. I don't think it's that actual surgery that scars me, I am a nurse, so no problem there! I think it's all the changes I will be making not only the physical things I have to do but also the social changes I will be making and peoples reactions. It is overwhelming a bit, I think rattled nerves are normal.

Hi Mich, no Ive not seen THIS surgery, but am in the O.R. Rest your fears though. The day of surgery they will get you there early, youll probablly sign paperwork. Then they will first bring you into a pre-op area. Youll change into a gown (which I always tell my patients was created by a man because no woman would create such an awful thing!) They will start an IV and thenyou usually meet the anesthesiologist, then the CRNA ( nurse anesthestist that actually does your case) and usually the OR nurse. Of course you will see your surgeon as well. It will seem like you are waiting around and then they will take you back. At my surgery center we give people Versed through their IV before we roll back to the OR. Versed is a nice drug that I call the Men in Black mind eraser. You will be awake but VERY relaxed. Once you are in the OR you will not remember much. They will place a breathing tube to assist your breathing while you are under anesthesia. You will NOT be awake during this. They will prep your skin, usually with betadine and the the surgery will begin. Once your surgeoun is done they will turn off the anesthetic medicine and let you start waking up. When you are breathing safely on your own, they will gently remove the breathing tube (you will NOT remember that either. They will then take you to a recovery area.

I hope that helps in easing your fears about the day. I think im most nervous about down the road with complications like slippage, erosion, etc.

I have been practicing CHEWING my food verses inhaling it.

My surgery is on january 20th and i'm SUPER nervous!!! I think my mom is even more nervous than I am. I've been waiting 7 months for this. I'm more worried about the fact that every family celebration we have is centered around food. How do I stop myself from getting depressed about this?

That Versed is awesome stuff! I didn't even have a chance to get nervous. I remember getting rolled to the OR, they had me scoot onto the operating table, then gave me the mask. I may have gotten through the Lord's Prayer, but I can't be sure. Next thing I know, they're waking me up and putting lovely heating pads on me. A little while later I was up in my room and I got to go home that night.

I haven't been hungry since the surgery (5 Jan), but have been consciously drinking broth with Protein Powder, Water, and eating no sugar added frozen fruit bars and Jello. They gave me medicine to help get rid of the gas (very helpful), an antacid, a pain reliever, and an antibiotic - all liquids. I've been doing pretty well. I've got one more day off from work and then I think I'll be ready to return.

I hope everything goes well for you with your upcoming surgeries!

Hi - I was rebanded on Jan 4th after originally being banded in 2008. I was as nervous the second time as the first. I think the main reason is because we are losing such a dependible friend "food". It's always there for us and always able to help us through our issues. I scares me to have to find other ways of dealing with my anxiety, etc. Maybe I'm way off on this for you but that's my issue.

My family also is centered around food. My husbands as well. I will have to work on this I'm sure.

Hi All,

What a nice site for sore eyes. I was starting to feel alone in all of this. I haven't told many people. I was banded on Jan 3. I started getting really nervous the week before, but the day of surgery I was not at all nervous. Go figure. Recovery has been ok, I don't feel great, but it could be worse. I've been taking an anti inflamatory and oxycodone. Nothing for gas pain. Get something! It is painful and also very strange. Today was the first day that I was actually hungry...actually starving. It's partially my fault as the idea of drinking Protein Shake after Protein shake is somewhat nauseating. I'm drinking those, chicken broth that I made from scratch and skim milk in the form of lattes. The idea of no food for 3 weeks is getting to me. I am looking forward to the next phase of this journey.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
