Help! What Do You Recommend For Bowel Movements After Lap Band Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I took the chocolate ex-lax and that worked like a charm. However, it did decide to hit at 4am. Not so fun then. ; )

I've tried milk of M, both pills & liquid. Benefiber powder in my Protein Drink everyday, and still issues! Ready for a jack hammer! :) More Water & walking I guess. :)

Oh, I do remember the post-op Constipation. I did the ex-lax chews, colace, and it basically took a combination of all of that, plus a ton of Water. Oh, and pain killers will back you up like nothing else, so if you take a narcotic pain reliever to help get through the eventual marathon bathroom experience and abdominal cramps that accompany a week of no poop, it will only perpetuate the cycle. Remember that you're not eating solid food, so there probably isn't as much waste as we are used to.

Benefibre and lots of Water. I would also check with your doctor and make sure you are not impacted...if that is the case, you will need something more powerful to clear out your system (3 weeks without a BM is serious, get it checked out!)

After taking milk of Mag in liquid form you end up with liquid comimg out. Just like they said there really isnt any substance living on a liquid diet.

My doctor said milk of mag... Start at full dose as often as it says until you have a BM and then work your way down to the lower dose until you get back on schedule. She said this will help stimulate your bowls to wake them up after surgery. I was banded on 12/29 and had the same problem.

I have used/tried everything that folks have suggested and most that are listed here. However, no miracles for me - nothing has been very effective. I still have periodic problems and can only resolve them with a mixture of remedies and double-dosing.

Good news is that persistent Constipation (and occasional sticking food) is my only issue. Still losing weight steadily and half-way to goal, despite some cheating over the holidays.

Banded 8/30 in St Petersburg by Dr Huguet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
