Hair Falling Out After Lap Band Surgery

Recommended Posts

Are you taking 5000mg of Biotin (available in tick tack size)? I've noticed some brands are only 1000 mg. Check your dosage and get the 5000. I also lost a lot of hair starting about 4 months out. Was very upsetting. It did slow down. Not sure if it was just a shock from surgery and weight loss or if the pills are helping. But since I get them on buy one get one free sales I keep taking them.

This happened to me in a pretty bad way last December going into January, and I can say pretty confidently that Protein and Biotin are NOT the be-all, end-all nutrients your body needs.

I did a lot of reading on this, went to doctors, and learned a.) Everyone reacts to anesthesia differently, so frequently the trauma of going under will sneak up on you and put your hair in a shedding cycle, b.) A side effect of rapid weight loss is your body hitting the panic button, because it thinks you're DYING, so it reroutes critical resources away from less important things like hair, and c.) Vitamin deficiences are an unpredictable beast.

I dunno if you've considered this, but you might well be Vitamin D deficient. I went in for a CBC early last year, and I was "catastrophically deficient" for Vitamin D. It was winter, the sun went down early and I worked full-time and went to school full-time indoors. I rarely saw the sun, so between my body not making enough of it and not drinking nearly so much fortified dairy and juice as I did pre-surgery, my system pretty much shut down. If you're noticing your nails are also really really brittle, that's another sign of deficiency. Your hair and your nails are made of the same thing, after all. But for sure, go to your doctors and check? Nobody here is claiming to be a certified medical professional, so consult your doctors before doing anything drastic or panicking too much, okay?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
