New - Gastric Plication Patient

Recommended Posts

Hi! My name is Noemi and I live in Pembroke Pines, FL. I had Gastric Plication surgery on Monday, December 19th, 2010. My procedure was performed by Dr. Jorge Sosa at Palmetto General Hospital. He also repaired my hiatal hernia.

Today, I am on day 8 - post surgery. The first few days post surgery were painful and uncomfortable. But, I must say that around day 6, I started feeling much better.

Tomorrow is my first appointment with the nutritionist - post surgery. Thursday, I have an appointment with the surgeon to have the staples removed. I am still on Clear liquids and it was tough during Christmas. I also go back to work tomorrow, so lets see how that goes.

Each day that goes by, I feel better

hi noemi

i got lapband done 1 year ago and have lost about 48-50lbs. the fills were a hassel. is that why you got plication? why did you choose plication over lapband? i chose lapband because it was a less drastic procedure and it is reversible. i hope you are well.

My surgeon suggested plication surgery. His patients are having very good results with it. Also, with plication you won't have the future Vitamin deficiencies that you get with bypass surgery. Like the lapband, it is fully reversible.

I am feeling almost normal now. The first seven days were the toughest.

Today is exactly 2 weeks since my surgery and I've lost 19 pounds, so far.

I had lap band my plication in May 2011. I have lost 77lbs. I don't have to have fills but the band helps too. I am very pleased with what I have lost. It was tough at first but glad I did it.

So my lap band slipped last week and I'm going in on Friday to fix it. My doctor today told me about the plication procedure and I have decided to go with it. I have had my band for three year and have lost 90 pounds, but for the last 1 1/2 years I have struggled with acid reflux, being over filled, and not able to loss any more weight. So my doctor wants to replace my band and also do the plication. She says that I will have instant restrictions. This will allow me to continue with my weight loss right away after surgery, instead of having to wait to heal then go for fills.

I was at my pre surgical testing today and the NP from the practice offered band with gastric plication I didn't know what to say. I have 2 weeks to think it over it through me for a loop because the whole point of me getting the band was that there is no re routting.

Hey Shap,

I know what you mean. I had no idea that placation even existed until yesterday. My surgery is Friday so I had to make a decision right away. I decided to go for it because it feels like a back up plan. I will still have my band so if I still need more restriction I have it. My doctor also told me that I will have restriction right away and your not hungry. With just the band you won't have restriction for at least 4-6 weeks. The other reason I'm going for it, is that can be done with removing or re-routing of the stomach. They are just rolling the stomach and creating a tube. But most importunely I trust my doctor. What ever decision you make it will be the best decision for you. I'll keep you posted. Two more days till the surgery!

I still have to find out if my practice is doing the plication with band. Usually, this type with the band is only sutures, and not any actual cutting or re-routing like the other WLS. It is supposed to keep you from overeating because the stomach below the band is effectively made as small as 1 cup or so, but can be reversed by simply taking the sutures out. It also is supposed to require less maintenance on the band (fills) because it is also helping to restrict your intake.

Well I had my surgery last Friday on the 20th. Recovery is soooo much fun. Lol

This surgery was to fix my slipped ban and do the plication. So I knew what I was in for. It's all about getting through the first 3 days. Make sure to walk around as much as possible, it helps with the gas. Also don't be afraid to take the pain meds, try to take a sip of Water ever 15 minutes. After the first 3 days you will be amazed at how quickly you start to feel like your self again. I haven't really felt hungry yet. I have one more week on liquids. I have lost 8 pounds since the surgery. Down to 200#. My goal weight is 180-190. I really miss working out, but don't want to overdue it my body is still healing. I realized today how much I've changed, I'm not missing food, but I'm missing working out. Didn't think that way when I was 300 pounds!

BTW I really can't tell the difference yet with having the plication. My doctor says I should have restriction when I try to eat food. One more week of liquids, then two weeks of mushy. So we will see.

@shap - I actually got a new band and the plication. My doctor did the plication because I am at a point in my weight loss that it really is more about diet and exercising and the plication allows me to eat smaller portions without having to deal with fills. The Lapland is the backup if I need more restriction down the road. I plan not to have a fill and see how I do long term with the plication. Also my doc uses the plication in band repair or replacement because it gives emidiate restriction which helps people not gain weight while they recover (the average gain back is 20-30 pounds). She is finding her patients who get the plication only gain back 2-3 pounds. So far I've lost 8 pounds. I only have 20 more pounds to my goal, so I'm hoping this helps me jump start my weight lost. I have been sitting at around 210 for awhile.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
