Pre-op Liquid Diet Help

Recommended Posts

I am on day 4 of my 7 day pre-op liquid diet and not doing well at all. How mandatory is the 7 day liquid diet? I have drastically reducing the amount of solid foods. I'm doing Liquid Protein with my coffee in the morning, chicken Noodle Soup for dinner, but have been eating campbell's Tomato Soup and a tuna sandwich with it for lunch. I get very dizzy when I do not eat a solid meal. I have really bad hunger pains that gives me chest pains when I do not eat. Replacing two meals I've found is easier but I must have something solid once a day. Is my surgery in jeoperdy?

hey, im on my pre opt liquid diet too. mine is for 2 weeks but for mine i am allowed to have one VERY light meal a day like a "salad with a lean cuisine" . my dr said the object of the diet is to shrink ur liver in order for the surgery to go smoother. he requires a 5% weight loss before surgery but each doctor is different. idk if not losing the weight would put ur surgery in jeopardy but it would probably just make it more difficult for them if the liver isnt shrunk. ive also heard that some drs dont require a diet before surgery but again each dr is different

I've heard stories of people going in for surgery and then waking up and being told that they still do not have the band, they had to stop the surgery because the liver did not shrink enough. One light meal a day is ok, but have 2-3 Protein shakes in addition to that throughout the day, also, this may be too late for you, but for others reading... My doc had me start that diet a month before surgery to make certain that my liver would shrink enough. This also kinda mentally prepared me for eating so much less after surgery and I lost about 15 pounds in that month before even having surgery!

I would talk to my doctor - that is probably going to make you feel much better.

The main objective seems to be to shrink your liver before surgery. If you are drastically reducing your calorie & fat intake, a little solid food shouldn't hurt you...especially if if's healthy solid food.< /p>

Just to be sure, though, check with your doc...none of us can answer this question better than he/she can! :-)

As you know, the 2 weeks pre-op diet is to shrink the liver prior to surgery. If the liver is too large there is a chance that they may have to post-pone the surgery. I was on Opti-Fast during my 2 weeks. I was able to have 5 Optifast shakes per day, unlimited sugar free popsicles, Jello, crystal light, Water, Clear Liquids. I had a cup of broth in the evening. It does take time to get used to this but you have to work with it. Remember, that the rewards in the long run are worth it. Plus, post-surgery you will continue to be on clear liquid diet for 1 week, then increasing to full liquids during week two.

I am also on my pre surgery diet. My Dr. wants me to drink 5 Carnation instant Breakfast servings a day( sugar free ) . They are really very good and if you go to www.carnationbreakfastessentials.com there is a gazillion recipes to make with them. One of my weaknesses has always been chocolate milk, so the milk chocolate ones in a blender are filling and taste awesome. I'm actually drinking one right now, with 1 cup skimmed milk, 1tsp. instant coffee, 1 cup of ice cubes, and entire envelope of Carnation Instant Breakfast, all in a blender. Allow it to ron for a while so ice is made into slush. Its awesome! Tastes like a DQ milkshake. I almost feel guilty drinking it. I also have been having a can of Campbells beef Consume'. It tastes pretty good too. Good Luck Everyone!!!!

New direction makes an excellent cream of chicken Soup (27 g) protien per serving . They also make a hot chocolate that is good too, it also has 27 grams protien. I was very suprised on how well these tasted. I used these while on my pre-op diet and now im using them on my post-op diet.

Most preop diets are all Protein with VERY Limited carbs. If you MUST have solids I recommend ditching the bread and noodles in the Soup. The are all carbs. A better form of carbs would be carrots, peppers which would give you something to chew and have low calories.

I am on pre-op day 4 (banded on 1/17/12). I understand this is suppose to be a very very low carb diet no sugar diet to shrink the liver. I do 5 meals a day (3)protein shakes (always more than 15g of Protein and no more than 5g of carbs) and (2) low carb meals or a lean cuisine not Pasta based long as it's 300 calories or less and more than 14g of protein then the carbs are ok. The meat and veg meals usually have less carbs then most of the frozen meal varieties.

with that spaced out throughout the day and LOTS of Water I'm pretty satisfied.. and there are a few freebies I can munch on too (sugar free Jello, celery, etc.)

Good luck.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
