Pain After My First Lap Band Fill...is This Normal?

Recommended Posts

I was banded November 15, 2011, and I had my first fill yesterday. There were 2cc's in the band and she added 3 cc's. I felt fine after and when I left. But about an hour later it started to feel tight across my chest. When I move wrong etc...It is where the band is. Of course the office is closed due to Christmas. I know I can call and speak to a nurse, I just don't want to sound like a baby. I am able to drink my shakes and liquids, without issue. I just wondered if this is just my stomach adjusting to the tightening. Any helpful advice? Thank you, Stacy.

I also had my surgery on November 11, 2011 and had my first fill yesterday. The doctor had a little trouble locating the port so stuck me twice but that did not hurt until about an hour later, I think the doctor put in 5 cc. I could not bend or move without pain and was nauseated and it hurt a bit in my back and my stomach swelled. I used ice and was able to drink the shake, I am felling a lot better today but still sore,

It could be some swelling after the fill. Or you could be just a bit too tight. As long as you can get liquids down and stay hydrated things are OK. But if something feels very wrong, it probably is, give them a call.

Did they tell you to be on liquids for a day or two after the fill?

Thank you for for reply. I am on liquids for a couple of days. I had a lot of swelling and used ice, I am felling a little better but still have a lot of gas and it hurts in my back when I drink the shakes, Today I have been just drinking a little at a time and it it better, If I am still feeling this way on Monday then I will contact the doctor, The doctor had a hard time finding my port and stuck me a few times so that is sore.

Have a Happy Holiday

You can have swelling inside, around the band from the fill. That can take a few days to resolve. But sometimes we have to get a little bit of fill removed. Then when you lose more weight, you can get another fill.

Just remember to stay hydrated, that's very important. And if you cannot get liquids down, call right away!

I am much better today. I was able to eat soft foods and did not have any problems. It was a rough couple of days, I guess it was the swelling,

My next fill is January 28th. MY high was 218 and now down to 199.00. I lost must of the weight when I was on the liquid diet, It was a big change for me as I am a diabetic and was always hungry, The doctor changed my insulin and blood pressure medicine.

It helps when you can talk to someone. Thank You

Dorothy

Well I only have pain now if I eat to quickly, or don't chew, or if I drink anything to soon. I did make myself vomit the other day I had such awful pain after eating. I may need to have some removed from the band. I go back on January 11, so I may just stay on Soups and try to do shakes until my scheduled appointment. It is very comforting to see the other posts, to let me know I am not the only person suffering with stuff I didn't expect. Thank you guys!

I have a journey ahead of me.

I started my journey Nov 8 on the liquid pre-op diet, then had surgery Nov 15, I had lost 9 lbs. prior to surgery.

I had my first fill on Dec 21 I was down 19 lbs.

I am presently down 26 lbs.

My goal is to lose 100 lbs.

That pain is called "getting stuck" stop eating so quickly and make sure to chew 25-30 times PER BITE, as a rule of thumb, or pinky as it may, don't put anything in your mouth that's larger than your pinky finger nail. Making yourself purge is very very bad as it increases the chances of slippage and errosion. Just take your time, meals should take 30 mins to consume NO LESS! and don't swallow anything that isn't chewed to an applesauce consistency. From your post it seems all of your recent pain issues are caused by improper eating.

Congrats on your losses so far!! What you now describe with the reactions to food are what I call the learning curve of a fill. Learn it well. As a previous poster said, purging can be hard on us. Slow down and chew well. As the habits become ingrained, it becomes easier.

BUT, also as the previous poster said, as soon as you feel that pain, STOP. Give it a chance to go down, then you can start eating again. If you add food on top of stuck, it just gets uglier.

I am nearly 4 years out. I just had a slight fill in September, and I had to learn what this fill level could tolerate. Each time is different. Take it slow and easy. You are doing well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
